Couldn't tell you what movie it was from, what's the question got to do with this project? :p
Just thought I'd say it before Scott has a chance...:D
Good job Scott! The engine looks like brand new going into the bay. I've got that shift boot for you with a couple other goodies next time we get together. Maybe take a maiden voyage downstate? I could just about bet you've got the only 535iTM in the States, maybe the world.

I'd love to hear the whole story of your conversion to manual. It's something I hope to do in the future.

Since Dave has a beautyous motor strap with which to hoist, maybe you could lose that lifting bracket on the front profile. If you do, please backspace the difference with washers for the bolts.
You've done a very nice detailing on the motor & the bay.
Congratulations on coming up with a project for the holidays. That was good thinking ahead, for a newleywed.

Very nice Scott! Check that thing into a museum when you're done, will ya? I'd hate to think of that beautiful engine in the streets of Chicago, all dirty and such.
That will be a treasure when you're done.

various replies below....
I've had a lot of help from a lot of people, and couldn't have done this project without advice or help from all of them. I'll save the list for the write-up web page on the swap.

I think a trip to your neck of the woods is a large posibility. Maybe the newest driver in your house would like to take it for a spin.....or is the wagon too uncool :D Most people go for the gold with these cars + S50/S52 but I went for bronze instead....lol. Having the parts laying around from the wreck was the only reason this project happened.

The 30 pin connector where the engine harness connects to the body harness changed in 9/90 so the body harness on the wagon is a bit different than the one for my 11/88 build 535. One of the independents in Chicago did a M30+auto swap a few weeks ago and knows exactly what to do.....unfortunately the female plug for the engine harness is not in the country.

That engine hoist belongs to a guy about three blocks from me. He has a kickass Chevelle and blew the engine before fall. He had just used it to pull the engine from the car and told me I could use it for my project. The straps came with the hoist. Much easier than using the lifting points as the one in the back is interfered with a bit by the firewall/tranny tunnel. A can of silvergray Glasurit paint helped me paint the airbox bracket and coil bracket that had to be welded in. As far as the wedded thinking ahead part goes, I watched my dad work these things beautifully as a kid. No wonder why we get along so well now!

The engine was too pretty to put in the car.....would have looked much better just sitting on the stand...lol. Nice chatting the other day!

With 5 doors, you need three pedals. Just stinking be-yoo-tiful.

Do you see that screw laying at the bottom of the dead pedal? Scott Hersted, get your ass out there and put that thing where it goes!
Ha,ha,ha, Aubrey can't wait to burn out your clutch! And tires, and gasoline and ....
Jus' kiddin' ol' friend, but I think Drew want's to tell you that you're missing a gear....
Amazing job! Congratulations to all involved, you deserve a pat on the back!
This is one for the books along with Drew's...

Jill doesn't think so :p We'll see if that changes with our road trip to Colorado this July.

Thanks Bill! After seeing so many crazier engine swaps over time, an M30 in to the 525iT started to seem REAL tame....and it is. I guess between Drew's project and my project, we are making the cars with combinations the way we would have likes to see them come from the factory, and that is part of the motivation. :D

I hope to wire it up next weekend. I had a 3.73ls diff in my old 535 (up from 3.46ls stock), so I will be putting that in there. My neighbor might get me some spent 16" tires so that I can do pegleg burnouts with the open 4.10 that is currently in there.....in the interest of the new engine, and it being winter here, I will probably resist the temptation and just put the 3.73ls in.

Good job Scott. I still think you should do the MegaSquirt ECU on it rather than OEM crap harness.

before even thinking of toying with it. Maybe get 10-15k good miles out of it. That should happen fairly quick as I drive a lot.

Awsome Scott. I love it. Almost makes me want to take on the same project. The makeing af a Rock Solid (M30) Super Wagon! ya voll
Can't wait to see how it drives.
And also everyone, including Scott, thanks for the help. I did the cable fix on my friends 535. Her seat was not going up and down (no jokes). Now her seat works great.
Here's the fix I did as dopcumented in our archives:

I bow to Winfred for his knowledge and documentation of the issue again.
I thenk Scott for showing me how to remove the seat.
Bimmers rule, as do the people who drive them.

what models do you like the most since you get to drive everything... For an everyday driver. I'm sure that George has contacted you asking the same thing... I'm just curious since i don't drive them until they are 4 or 5 years old usually..

Well, to be honest, the new bimmers are too "compliant". Too easy to drive. I still love my 535im for what it's worth (joyous raw fun). LSD rear end, break-away power. I still love my E38 for it's comfort, size, and speed.
New cars, the E46 M3 is still high on my list. The new M5 with SMG is totally entertaining and thrilling, but I'd likely still opt for the manual transmission when it becomes available.
What I do like, is the 650im. Nailed down delight. With the active steering, yes I like active steering, it's awsomely nimble. Just too expensive for my blood. Can't wait for those to come around used.
Still, when all is said and done. My next purchase will be a E46 M3 Manual tranny convertible to replace Wifeys existing Z3. And I'd seriously consider an E39 M5 to replace my 535. But we're still a ways off cash wise and E39 M5 Depreciation wise. Even though I work at a dealer, I still expect to buy "used".
Now on the side of practicality, and when considering NEW, I really do like the X3, even though I'm not one for SUVs. I'm also mulling around the idea of a euro delivery X3 when they are available with diesels (the twin diesel sounds inviting). Very carlike drive, nice and hard. And room, might not be a bad replacement for one of my 740's.

I am putting the M30 from my 11/88 535 in to the wagon and the engine wiring harness does not mate perfectly with the body harness on the wagon. You will stay far away from this area during your project.
