Just wondering if anyone caught the launch of the Atlas that went off from Cape Canaveral this afternoon?
We just watched it go, and man was that thing ridiculously fast! It was over in 30 secs (and no, thats not "what she said.")
It uses a main RD-180 engine (a Pratt & Whitney / Russian engine) and an upper stage RL-10 (I **** you not- its slogan here is "Thrust you can trust!")
Its also sporting 5 strap-on boosters for extra thrust (giggle).
Anyway, back to work now. Later all.

Yes, that was one impessive launch !
The 5 solid rocket boosters were made here in Sacramento at Aerojet. Each SRB provided 250,000 pounds of additional thrust. This was also the first ever mission that had 5 boosters mounted on an Atlas V.
That is probably the reason for it's incredible speed.
It must be a real rush to see one of those 'blast off' in person.

No, no kaboom. I mean, if Homer can eat the stuff, it can't be that bad, right?
And no, it didn't get me laid, I had to go out and do that on my own :( Its a tough life being an engineer.
