My local auction has a 1994 840CI with 99k coming up for auction. Black with tan leather. It has front end and left rear damage but air bags didn't go off. Are parts for the 840 hard to get? How much should a guy pay for one with a salvage title? Is it worth my time to get involved with this project?

Make sure the chassis isn't bent, if it is, it could be fixed, but it will never ride the same. There definitely would be electrical issues all over the thing. Have the engine inspected for cracks in the block. To a certain extent everything is repairable.
Also, if it comes with a junk title, then you will be issued a salvage title and this will prevent you from insuring your investment 100%. basically, if you put your hear and soul into this car, which would be a project im totally up for, it would really suck if something were to happen to it again and in turn you're not compensated for the loss. I got screwed when I restored an old Alfa Romeo and it was stolen and vandalised.
Otherwise, do what your best judgement decides is the way to go.

the e31 is such a complex car i would stay away from one in this condition.. it may not be as straightforward to fix, and if not.. you could be talkin major $$$
if you really are interested in a v8 e31.. my friend is selling one on his site:

there are not that many E31s out there for parts, so you may end up spending a lot of time and money hunting down everything to fix it.
Just look for a good one $10 to 20k.
