I have been posting about very rough idle (one cylinder not working) while starting from cold in the morning. I changed the plugs, put Beru (back).

What I noticed today is that starting from cold the idle was rough (one cylinder not working, as nearly always). But after I turned off the ignition and restarted the engine (still cold), it was smooth! Coincedence?

nope. its too cold in here to do anything. and I would not dare to took out the injectors, not sure I will be able to put them back :)
At least with my current level of knowledge in E34s.

the comp should have reset. because I took out the battery for more than 24 hours once (last week, when there was -30C).

I later discovered that I had two broken plastic fan blades, right next to each other. Amazing how rough that made the engine run.

Check the obvious, simple things first!!

I got one plastic fan blade missing. It sounds great - I have no intention to fix it! Everyone should remove one......

Cheers,

Shaun

Had to spin the engine for a while in the morning. But it started. Last week I changed the oil to 0W-40 (that stuff is very expensive). Engine was spinning without problems. Guess the fuel froze a little.

I had the same issue. Engine started really rough. Ran it for 3 minutes and then switched off the ignition and started the engine. Well, no cylinder miss this time. This only happens when the engine is cold.

Another thing, engine was making a horrible noise at first, for about 4-5 secs. I can't describe that sound, but its not normal. I got a friend with Audi 80 (B4, 2.6L engine!) whose car also makes this sound when starting up from very cold. What is that? Oil could not have frozen, 0W-40 freezeing temp is -54C.

Car stays in a public parking lot, outside. Those heaters need mains, and there is no electricity plug in those parking spaces. It won't work for me.

leave it idling all night like a deisel?

I dont know man, thats mighty cold...id stay in bed till the sun shined.

Did the M1 0w-40 help much there?

In that weather your gonna have a very angry engine at startup anyways.

how far do you drive? Maybe drain that out and save it and go with thinner synthetic? matters on the travels though.

I go to work, come back. maybe somewhere else. usually not more than 80km (50miles) daily.
Why drain it out? Its liquid till -54C. and I would not want to use something very thin, as this is a 1994 car with 141K miles.
