As much as I love my car, if it was a question of anyone's life (especially my kid's) or the car, I'd be willing to total the car to save that life.

Somebody in the story is stupid(mom, operator, police, reporter?) but nowhere does it say how far she lived or how long it would her to go get her key or what the conditions where like. The 911 operator gave her 2 choices, we break your window or your kid dies. Maybe just maybe there was a 3rd choice?

In KS there's laws against people leaving their kids in a hot car, every summer they bust a few people for it. They should have canned her ass for a day, that would have been the last time she left her kids sit outside.

Oh..I was only going in for a minute to pick up Chinese food, and I figured I'd leave the car running for the A/C, so my little booger eater would be cool. Didn' want him to die in a hot car.

First I agree that the emergency people should just break the window and remove the child. No hesitation. However, after googling a bit, I found some differing opinions. She was only 1.5 miles from home. IF and a big IF, if the child was in no danger/stress, I can see her offering an alternative to car damage. I can also see the emergency people properly saying no. However, I think everthing got off track at this point.

I bet she threw a fit and they then arrested her. Now she sues because the police say she valued the car over the child. She says she was defamed without reason and wants her day in court.

She may be correct simply because she offered what she thought was a logical solution and was turned down. Where she went wrong was to get aggitated/upset enough to get arrested. Police /emergency people/media may have went wrong in saying she valued car more than her child.

The court system should have fun with this. Watch the media.

Thought of that and I made the assumption that she had no transportation and wanted the emergency people to take her home. Perhaps she went off when they would not. Who knows. Entire issue is interesting on many levels.

I think this is the main point behind the police/fire issue, because she called 911 for help, they were going to solve the problem, but then she wanted to use them like a taxi service for help. Weren't her house keys in the car? If there was someone home, then why didnt she just call them to bring the spare set in the first place.

A problem w/ 911 is people call it for things they really shouldn't... just like how people go to the ER at the hospital when they should just see their own Dr. My mom worked in the ER for 25yrs and says about 1/2 those that come into the ER dont really need to be there.

wrong cases at the ER, my wife is a nurse and had a paret bring their child in to the childrens specialist at 3am to see a doctor because said child was not growing fast enough.....

I found out she call ems and asked them to take her to get her car key. WRONG request! Then she left the car/child to go home and get the key after ems arrived. I believe they told her she would be arrested if she did leave.

On the other hand, the ems shattered the window over the child without covering it in tape first (believe that is standard procedure). Why did they not use another window away from the child? Looks like a series of dumb/weak moves on all sides.

Human nature and behavior under stress and perhaps anger is always interesting.

Don't be too quick to judge if you don't know the circumstances. I was sued by local city because I had my dog in the car in the summer. The car was in a shade under the tree with all windows open. I could demonstrate that the temperature in the car was lower than in my apartment as I don' have an airconditioning. In addition there was a breeze in the car which wasn't in my apartment. The cops wouldn't even investigate or listen to arguments. The funny thing was that when I went to court with the cop duly present it turned out the prosecutor couldn't even find the statue under which I was charged.

I am not defending the woman just saying that breaking windows and hauling somebody to court is not always the only solution.
