Had to replace the end tank on my cars radiator this week.
When I pulled the rad and oil cooler unit I was absolutely shocked at what I found..Check it out..
And the car ran sweetly with no hint of a problem..
Anyhow, all is sorted after I found a major leak in the oil cooler as well-this was probably the cause of all the crap build up..

I think a small animal may have crawled into the radiator when you werent looking.

all 535i autos have an auto trans cooler hooked up to the radiator (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD22&mospid=47382&btnr=17_0114&hg=17&fg=05). the oil coolers are rare and seperate. (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD22&mospid=47382&btnr=17_0059&hg=17&fg=05)

Every 535 in S.A. came fitted with an oilcooler as std.
I think its got to do with the climate .
Paul,Ozz should also have the oil coolers as std fitment??
Sorry mate,NZ....

Barry, no e34 that I know of had oil coolers fitted as standard. I thought you where aussie there for a moment, S.A = South Australia, well not quite! I have the lines and cooler at home, I just need the oil cannister (US$75 used or us$300 new) and a few clips to install it. Do you have an oil temperature gauge Barry? These things are very rare in Australia.
i got an oil cooler. and ETK says that i indeed should have an oil cooler.

Kris, I think Barry mistaken the tranny cooler for an oil cooler. I think you are right that there is no need for a separate oil cooler for a regular car. The standard cooling system cools engine and oil fine. Only in race cars do we find these.
Or maniacs who drive like racers everyday......oh, not in Aus, cos the cops will nick them in a minute!.

No guys-My car has an oli cooler-picture above
It also has the transmission cooler in the hot inlet side of the radiator-picture above ,see 2 trans cooler pipes disconnected.
Kriss,Ive got a donor 535 manual-Oil cooler with all fittings and oil filter housing still on the car..
Spoke to my mate at BMW SA..(he`s a bloody test driver-what a job!!!)Anyhow,Gino reckons South Africa had oil coolers as std. fitment due to the summer temps reached here...sometimes 35-38*c..
