engine noise

for awhile i've been having an awkward loud skeel inside my engine. at first i thought something was rubbing against the belt, but i popped the hood and nothing really seemed to be in the way...and hints of what it might be would help. thanks

engine mileage and type (m20/m50) would be helpful. Is the noise coming from the front of the engine? Pulley bearing will sometimes cause squeaking noises but squealing sounds more like a loose belt. Is the sound constant or only occaisional? Check the tension of your belts first up.
