I swear I searched!!
1990 525i. What is the oil capacity and what is the factory recommended weight? Where the heck is the oil filter cartridge! Is it the big box on the passenger (USDM) side under the plastic cover?
Thanks

-JesdaI don't know what the recommended weight is, but I've been running 10w30 for the last 30k miles or so with no issues, ticking or anything of that nature.
Oil filter cartrige? The m20 just has a old fashioned can-type screw-on filter, unlike all other e34s which have the paper filters. It's on the side/bottom of the engine on the passenger side.
I use Mobil 1, 5w-30, 5 quarts with filter. The filter is underneath the exhaust manifold, mounted horizontally which makes it all the better for spilling oil onto hard to clean parts when you remove the old one.

I think the manual says 4.3 qts. Pour 4 qts. in, give it some time to settle.
Then check your dipstick to see where the level is at. Fill it to the top end of the crosshatch and no more than that.
5 Q. puts the level spot on at the top line of the dipstick in the 325iX. I've changed the oil too many times to count in that car, and I've put in 5 Q. every time. Go figure.

That filter is in a strange location! I was worried that it would be too hot to get in there and take it out, but it was 21 degrees out and by the time I finished draining, it was cool enough to remove by hand.
Thanks for the help.
