Front seats

Hi, I have an 89 535i and the reclining mechanism on the front seats doesn't work. It's been like this since i got the car and I was wondering what the problem was. The seat still goes up and down but i have to pull or push it myself coz if i pull the lever it will just fall back on top of the back seat!! If someone could tell me what I need to fix it'd be a big help! thanx :)

Same here... non-powered seats. The seat back just falls backwards when you pull on the recliner. Is there a spring or gas shock that might need to be changed? Weird thing is, I saw this other E34 in the shop my car was in... and I tried the seats as well, and they were all like that! (non-powered as well of course)

yeah i think there is a shock under the seat that might have called it a day! it's starting to annoy me at this stage. not very user friendly when driving and trying to adjust the seat!

If your seat is electric powered, check Bruno's site. I think he has pic and text on the repair. www.bmwe34.net
