Last fill up, I guess out of habit (wifes Sequoia doesn't care and I'm a long dime Diesel guy) I put the junk in. MAN does she hate me now. Low end pinging, BIG loss of that "freight train" like pull and I think I'm smelling fuel through the exhaust. She's pissed off!

I'm guessing, the motor is retarding the timing and fawking up the whole program?

I have a half tank left. Should I octane boost it and fill with 92? Just run it out? Drain the tank? (no, not that last one... :D )

arghhhhhh the PO before me ran 87 in the car for 2 years!!!!!!! and then when I bought it left it on E, checked the range function, 17 miles, yeah the trip home was 5 hours. gee, thanks. (there's much more to this rant but dif topic)

i guess i am wrong. i am pretty certain that i saw documentation for an e32 m30 that only called for 87 aki. sorry. i wonder if i am confusing it with the m20 or such. at any rate, the motor is only 9.0 compression, i can't imagine that too much damage was done, especially since IIRC (again) the e24s and other older m30s used the 87 aki.

Personally I would drop some Octane Boost 101 into it and run it out, but that's me. :)

It won't hurt to top it off with some 91 Octane though it will help to stop the plugs fouling and the oxygen sensor will clean up a little.

All the caps I have seen are 95 Octane or better.

I run BP Ultimate (98 Octane) in all three Cars and the Bike (even the two stroke mower gets it)

If it hadn't been for the Bike dropping a cylinder (badly fouled plug. FYI its a Ducati so dropping one is bad believe me:( ) I would have still been running the detergent filled Optimax (which is now 100 Octane with the 10% Ethanol).

Interesting and somewhat surprising that you guys in the US don't have a higher Octane rated fuel than 91 is what I was getting at.

I'm not sure angrypancake, it would be interesting to check out. I wouldn't be surprised if there are differences between the way our governments decide to measure things.

In the US there should be a sticker on how they get the number... I would assume it's the same deal in Oz

Aus. uses Ron numbers..
87 AKI = 92 ron
91 AKI = 95 ron
94 AKI = 98 ron

aki = anti knock index

If you don't have a performance chip for your US model M30, then it only needs 87 octane AKI. Unless you get knocking by using it.

AKI is average of RON and MON. (More info on octane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating).)

AKI = (RON + MON) / 2

You are not going to see much if any benefit of running anything of a higher octane since the stock chip is de-tuned to run on 87. I think this was done for US emissions standards. However, this may not be true for Euro and Oz model M30s.

I agree, do not get the cheap gas station stuff, but you're donating your money to the oil companies by buying the highest octane if you dont need it.

M20s may also have the same requirements.

The mid-grade fuel at the pump is just premium mixed with cheap stuff anyway.
