If so, what do you think? Is it okay around town or is it harsh. I know it's powerful. I see so many for sale with around 40-50k miles and I'm wondering why people aren't holding onto them.

Cuz they're gettin' new ones.
People who bought the E39 M5 new don't think about money the way you or I do, and they're bored of their cars now and want the new 5 or something else.
That, and the leases are running out on them. Those kinds of buyers typically don't purchase the car at the end of the lease, and the cars have to go somewhere.
Their loss, our gain.

I got the urge a while back:

There are tons more e39 m5's than e34's (literally :) ) so that may explain some of the availability. I could see getting one, expecially as they drop below $30k.

Haven't driven one yet but interested as well. I do love my E34 but as it ages I have seen a 2001 740i sport in my future. Well then my buddy got a 2006 M3 (might be a 2005 but he just got it last month). An M5 just might be an alternative.

I took one out for a test drive back in my valet parking days. Phenominal car, but from what I've heard on bf.c, there were a few significant problems with them. In general, its a lot of heavy maintenance on a not so DIY friendly car.
Some people with more skills than I have may disagree as to doing the work yourself on the car, but in general, they have more problems and the work is more difficult.

Just log onto Realoem and price a rotor for the E39 M5...that should let you know what you're getting into.

BRAKE DISC, VENTILATED
QUANTITY 2

$333.68
That's for the rear wheels. For front wheels it lists 333.68$ EACH disc... They've got to be joking.

The S62 is not reliable and the car rolls through corners like a boat. I feel the same way about the E39 540/6, minus the powertrain issues.
I'd own one if I could acquire it at a fraction of the market value. Then I'd sell it.

I couldn't resist the temptation! I just bought a 2002 M5 last week. I've wanted one for a long time and the opportunity finally came along. Amazing car. Very easy to drive to and from work ( 25 mile commute).
A real beast when you want it to be!!
I pinch myself every day to make sure I'm not dreaming!

Wow. I've seen those prices in the dealer, but I thought BMA or RealOEM would do better. Yikes -- bigtime.
Congrats, Will. Enjoy her. I know I would. Post some pics!
