i don't have a garage so i parked it in my parents heated garage to clean out the car. there was 3 small stone chips in the glass when i bought the car, but when i pulled it out of the garage into the 15 degree weather it went pop pop pop & now the crack is end to end.
how much should i expect to pay for a new one & it there an aftermarket or is it only a bmw item?
thanks
tim s.
My new windshield cost me $150. There are aftermarket replacement available, which is what I got. The price included installation. Hope this helps.

they say the bmw shields are softer and more suceptable to micro chips that eventually look like it was sandblasted, the aftermarket ones are harder and not as flexable. Mattering on how your insurance handles things you might get lucky cause it's a safety issue some waive the deductable. I personally would go the OEM shield.

$150 sounds cheap. I think my brother's e28 windshield was $350, and its smaller.

Check your insurance policy, In CT. some insurers have a zero deductible for glass. My insurance has it as an option which I asked for. Some agents add it when they write your policy unless you ask them not to.

Call a few dealers and get the names of their subs.... You can call the sub and ask them what they have available. I have found the following in my area:
BMW OE from dealers + install from contractor = widely varies but expensive
BMW OEM sekurit/sigla may or may not have roundel = $350 installed
Pilkington = $275 installed
PPG = $250 installed
369.00 for o.e.m. not installed.
i will get the after market at this point due to my sad looking budget & i am trying to pay off the car.

If it was the original windshield.... make sure the repair shop has new clips and seals and stuff when they install the new one.

When I replaced mine (3 times), they said they wouldn't put a new glass in until the rust under the rubbers had been repaired and they just happened to have the name of a good body repairer.
I drove the car home without a windshield and repaired the rust myself, then they came to my home and installed the new glass.
I went with the Pikington screen each time.
cheers,
Greg

Drive home without windshield?! Did you wear a helmet?
i paid around 150$ for an aftermarket one . It came straight from germany in a cool wooden box. I paid an extra 40$ for the aluminium frame thing and the clips from the wreckers. I got 30$ back because i made a bet with the boss of the glass shop that supplied the windshield. He sayed i can't get the clips off from a car without breaking them. 2 hours later i was back and when i showed him the bag with the clips he had a face like he just seen his dead grandma. Really funny

Ha! It was the middle of winter here, also had to drop side windows and no jumper/jacket - froze my **** off, especially at freeway speeds.
