G'day, I've been thinking about getting a 528i e39 a couple of years down the track since they are already down to about $27 000. I was wondering how are they long term reliability wise and whether they have any characteristic problems (things such as shimmy for the e34 :( )

with normal maint. they're pretty solid, my dad's had one for a couple years now. got it at from the stealer with 53k on it, now has 80k, and is still flawless, but he takes really good care of it. just had struts replaced. the ball joints have a tendency to wear quickly, and one of the wires in the heated seat burned out. other than that the only problem was one day it was in the shop and some ******* worker at the dealer backed into it and put a HUGE dent in the rear quarter panel. they replaced/painted though. i'll go snap a picture or two real quick

Friend of mine has a 99 528i. Over 110k miles now only problems have been what i consider early water pump failure ( 75K) Hey.. just like my 95'...

at first, feels different from an e34, but after driving for a while, the similarities are remarkable.
what symptoms, by the way, on the ball joint failure? mine sounds like a muted loose something when going over bumps.
Have a look at this: http://540i6.com/probsfixes.html
It's aimed at the E39 540, but the majority of items apply to other models too.
