Last night Bill showed up with new part in hand and we proceeded to get the old worn out water pump out of the car, but to Bill's surprise the new one didn't fit. Although the part numbers matched exactly, the weep hole is different...here are the pics. I think Bill figured it out so we should have this fixed today. Thanks for your help Bill, cause as we saw with the old pump I didn't have much longer before that think would have blown.
First one is Bill arm deep in my engine bay. Second and third pics are the water pumps beside each other. Old on left and new on right.

...the casting numbers are different. The one we got is for an M54, an E39 525i. E39 528i would use the same pump as we pulled out. And guys, this thing wasn't leaking much, but bearings on both ends are TOAST!!! It's a 2001 build pump, BMW factory part, so remember, 60k miles or 5 years max!!!

Nice of you to help him out Bill - I usually do a tstat housing (with gaskets) and new thermostat when doing the water pump.

Bill suggested that, and we threw the idea around, but money is a bit tight and beleive it or not an extra $50 isn't in the budget right now. Maybe in a couple of months.

Michael, when you get around to doing it, you might want to get the Mission Trading Company (MTC) metal thermostat housing over the plastic ones.

That's next on the list along with some other things. Thanks for the input...

We got to Michael's about 4:15, pump was in the car by 4:30 or so, and Michael was taking it to soccer practice at 5:30. He reports so far no leaks (and it's MUCH quieter without that bad pump rattling around!)
Good catch, Michael. That could have been disastrous on the highway.
