Stomp test..?

what exactly is that, and what does it do? oh and how does it work?

turn key to run position and "stomp" the gas pedel to the floor 5 times with in 5 seconds of turning the key, let the pedel come all the way up between stomps, the check engine light should start flashing, somebody posted the list of codes the other day
