Small change of plans.
S2000 and MazdaSpeed Miata are out............you do not finance a depreciating asset, end of discussion.

Old contenders Miata & 1st gen MR2, new contender 2nd gen MR2. With some patience, might even be able to score a Turbo for cash. Then i’ll be more than happy with the thrust and can limit the tuning to suspension and brakes. At some point any other car off the list will require a big shot of vitamin HP. Including a non-turbo 2nd gen.
Make this assumption when voting please.
Dunno that might make a 2nd gen MR the easiest and cheapest. Buuuuuut a blown Miata or swapped/blown 1st gen might be better on gas and a better value in teh long run. (feel free to comment/bs on this issue)

92 BMW 325i 120K, ‘Rolf’ (clutch in progress, 3 doors that don’t latch *rolleyes* not too swank eh)
91 Volvo 745T 194K, ‘Thor’ (13 psi *smirk* gulps 93oct, eats batteries, no power steering, daily *ouch*)
93 Datsun NX2000 165K ‘Carla’ (alive, thumpin MP3s *grin* Hers *sigh* )

Kinda makes the ‘Patriot Act’ an oxymoron, eh.......

After driving my cousin's 2nd gen MR2 Turbo a while back, that was my vote. Very fun cars, nicely styled, and typical top notch Toyota build quality. Think of it this way: how much would you have to spend on a Miata to get it to that overall level of performance?

Supposedly the second generation MR2 is an evil handler. It looks great and goes great, but from what I've read and seen (you don't want to know) it's a bitch to drive. It just doesn't handle like it should, and is very tough to control.

A turbo'd Miata (MX-5) or souped up 1st gen MR2 would be better, IMHO.

I prefer the Celica All-Trac, though. Same turbo engine as the MR2, but mounted up front, and with AWD. If it's good enough for Carlos Sainz...

Not too hard. They pop up in my local Auto Trader from time to time. There are forums like this one for that generation Celica, so you could try there. They're out there.

Also easily modified. I've driven 300bhp versions.

That's a 3rd gen MR2. Paul's talking about a 1st or 2nd gen.

turbo mr2 is a quick car, there are quite a few JDM mr2 turbos floating around in australia. still i voted for a miata, they are a good car very well balanced. As for not financing a depreciating asset, haven't you heard of a lease? personally i'd kill to have a new model MX-5 (miata)
