Hello there, can anyone tell me what causes the "whirring" noise in these gearboxes, usually heard at startoff or under heavy load. Its the ZF tranny in a 94 540.
Thanks
I've had that noise in my trans since I bought the car. It is louder when cold, then tapers off. Dealer couldn't figure it out. It's been there for the last 100,000 miles. I figure I'll wait till it absolutely fails.

between the filter and the transpump, between the O rings, you can double them up and the sound should go away.

Thanks a lot fellas. I've had the tranny re built, and it still does it. Under warranty the tranny shop has replaced just about all moving parts...they're about to put it back in for the 3rd time tomorrow...I'll let you know how it goes. But thanks for the advice...

Whoa... wait a minute... you mean you spent $2500+ for a 10 cents O-ring?

Probably...the tranny has 140K on it anyway...but it seems my physics teacher was right.."the person that collects all his information, too late, is the perfect definition of a fool"....I like to think he was just trying to get us to ask questions...
Thanks Bill!!
It's now on my list of thing to do.

Eh... You probably could have postponed the ineviteble by several years... if it wasn't slipping, then it could have lasted a while. Hope you get good warranty with the new rebuilt.

Indeed, the usual 12k or 12 months. Thanks for all your help. I'll post a note in a few days, and let you know if the filter kit sorts it out.
Thanks.
