View Full Version : Ridge on rear brake rotor
I've read not to turn the brake rotors. Going to replace brake pads on rear wheels '89 535i. Have a ridge running on circumference of rotor.
Should that just be ignored?

I wouldn't worry about it on the rears.

check the thickness, you might be under the limit with a groove and need to replace the rotors.

If still within spec for thickness, etc., consider having them turned. I did all four on my e30 with no ill effects. Even the lathe jockey that turned them for me was pretty sure they would warp. They were still within spec and haven't yet warped after several thousand miles. It was like $10/rotor to have them done. Of course, I'm not driving that car very hard or any street racing, etc.

If they are straight and over spec, you can campher the pad with a file so it won't contact the ridge until they have had a chance to seat, just a small camphor is all that it needs. Turning the rotors is chancy since some lathe setups will register off the raw casting instead of the machined portion on the rotor.

For a point of reference, I usually get two sets of pads to one set of rotors. The rotors are really not expensive.

i have got a slight hot spot on one of my front rotors, gives vibration on gentle braking at 80 kph, otherwise fine. had thought of light machining (also has a lip) dont think i will bother now. are the oem disks worth it or are there suitable substitutes.. (1994 540)

Brembo is OEM, buy it from your local importer, There are other brands, but I have always had good luck with brembo on all cars and they are cheap enough.
