M20 and M30 transmission question

Would an 5-spd getrag 260/5 bolt up to the M30 enigne, but have a different ratio than the Getrag 260/6 that came in the 535s?

I looked on realoem, but I want to know for sure and what would be the downfall to using the transmission...

Someone who maybe done this before?

I dont thing they are interchangeable, maybe between diffy years of the 525 but not across the board to a 535..just guessing though.

Realoem shows a same exact transmission picture.. Long as the bolt pattern is the same on the bellhousing - it should be fine.

click the picture then look at the part number, I doubt they would use a 535 trans in a 525 car, dude go for it!!!! Im all for it, just make sure it will work, look at pressure plates and clutches too.

I once found a website on which a person told how to drop a chevrolet V8 into porsche 911 using a plate drilled to accept the bellhousing of the transmission and the engine.

I'm a little confused by the subject versus the content of the thread, but let's hammer this one home, for the last time.

1) M20 and M30 transmissions are NOT interchangeable on the E34. They have different bolt patterns and use different sized flywheels. Here are the technicalities: no getrag 260 will interchange without swapping case fronts -- the bellhousing is part of the front half of the case. This requires pressing off the rear half of the case -- doable if one can fabricate tools or obtain the factory tools. Then there's the whole issue of output shaft pitch, which I recall Jeff saying was an issue (but haven't looked into myself) -- not a big problem if installing a custom driveshaft. A custom shift console would also be required. Theoretically, you could swap the bellhousing on a 4hp-22 to work on either an M30 or an M20, but late E28 and all E34 535s have electric controls, while every M20 with a 4hp has a kickdown cable.

2) There are a couple of minor differences between the 260.5 and the 260.6. The 260.6 has lateral cooling fins and few minor internal hardware differences (so swapping fronts and rears would be...questionable). They generally have different fluid specs -- the E34 260.6 uses ATF, while the 260.5 found in most E30s uses MTF.

3) ETK, especially the information found on RealOEM, uses generic pictures. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they are the same. Follow part numbers and supercessions (the latter is impossible to do on realoem). Or get a real copy of ETK -- the latest version is lightyears ahead of realoem -- and use that.

Yes, but it's now distributed on DVD. I'm sure there are tons of people hawking them on the 'bay, though. That or slip the local dealer's parts counter people $30 for it.
