this is in my sister's car a 90 535ia and
she has a nakamichi cd-400 installed...
we installed it a year or so ago and today
when we turn the car on the cd player is
playing/spinning up but there is no sound
coming from the speakers...
anything i can test to see if the amplifier
is the culprit?

Check wires to see if it comes loose at the head unit. Amp has its own fuse at the fusebox... check there. Maybe the headunit amp supply wire is bad... try using antennae supply wire to power up the blue amp wire.

high probability that there is a fuse located between the two wire harnesses plugged into amp. you have to unbolt the amp from the trunk to check it, so you'd probably want to check as many other locations as you could first.

I've had the same thing happen to my Alpine HU a few months back. Annoying as hell, because I enjoy music. Anyway, after a few failed attempts at locating the problem, I just pinpointed it to the radio itself.
It didn't make sense for me that it would read properly (displaying numbers of tracks and play time) but with no output. So I went it to a shop that specializes in those kinds of repairs. They charged 30$ for the estimate of the repair. Then you decide if the repair is worth it; if it is, your 30$ is credited towards your repair:)
Result: Just a small wire/soldering that came loose after normal usage. wear and tear.
Call headunits retailer and ask them if they service them. If not, they'll refer you to them. They all know where to get them repaired. Or simply call Alpine USA; they will tell you where THEY send their customers.

This is a simple test before sending it off to repair... measure positive to that cable and ground to chassis with a multimeter...
This brings me to using the antennae cable instead... or vice versa since it is the same... providing postitive to the amp to trigger it on.

i switched amps from my car to hers
her amp in my car works...
my amp in hers does not
i can see the music on a multimeter from the headunit (when i hook the mm to the plug in the trunk)

You need to pull head unit out... check the amp power wire for voltage.
