1972 Volkswagon beetle. I remember floating to school when I was young with streets 4 feet underwater. I later learned to drive it when I was 11. It was a good design by Mr. Porsche and with the specifications by Adolph Hitler. Very reliable until it burst into flames from a leaking fuel line... much like Adolph himself.

When I got out of the hospital from being run down by a car on my bike, the parents decided I wasn't gonna be riding anymore so they bought me a 2nd hand Mazda 1300 (it was the current model back then).

only a few aussies and kiwis will know this one.After a string of motorbikes I got a LJ Torana GTR(not XU1) which was my backup to my Ducati 900 S2.It would wheelspin in third in the wet:D .....but it was all over at 160Km/hr
man i love the sound of the GTR's there was one around here, that i eventually found out was owned by a brother of a friend of mine. but only after her brother sold it :( he sold it and bought a proton GTi (real step up NOT!)

learned to drive on my friends lexus es300 when i was 14. he was/is the worst driver in the world (still isn't allowed to drive in my/any of our mutual friends presences). first car 89 accord true grandma car, i got it from my grandma. then '93 525 which got up close and personal with a tree. now i rock out with Ezekiel, my razor scooter.

Word, same one I'm driving today!

Definately a proud owner, bought it without the "financial aid" of the parents... Chose it over a VW GTI which they wanted to buy me....
So I said, uh uh... E34. So I worked at a Fred Meyer and bought it myself, they were happy, I was happy... I was short of cash, but still quite content :-)

I don't think I would buy any other fine automobile besides the BMW Five or Seven series...

1975 Toyota Corolla 2dr sedan.

Very original, one owner. I learnt to drive in it...

I added the mags, noisy exhaust,fixed back buckets and 4 pt harnesses...
and I abused it severly!! Aussies... for the record, its was a stock 1.2L, and a gemini couldn't touch it!!

I bought her 8 years ago... And I still have her!! She'll get some TLC when I get the chance, and the $$$!!

(Its strange googling cars...and finding a pic of your own vehicle from years ago, isn't it!!) :D

1972 Special Edition Super Beetle Baja Edition. Mine didn't have the stripe on the side or the driving lights, but it WAS that car... Man, I drove the crap outta that car. Next came a '74 VW Thing, then a '77 Datsun B210, then a '69 BMW 2002- after that it was 99% BMW's.......

Mine was a blue 1977 Chevy Caprice Classic, two door with white vinyl top and white wall tires. This picture shows the 4 door. Not exactly a chic mangnet, although the back seat was huge!;)

Mine was the same Metallic Cinammon Brown, but with four doors and a metal roof.

318 cu. inch displacement with four-barrel carbs and a transmission from a '72 duster (after my dad fried 1st gear in the original tranny). It was the car I brought home in from the hospital after I was born. Because it lacked a torque converter (duster tranny) I couldn't take it over 70mph. On my first date with my senior year girlfriend (high school) the timing chain broke and she helped my push it home. (8 bent push rods)

Parents got rid of it when I came home for Christmas after my first semester of college when I leaned against the rear quater panel and the side-light went into the trunk (metal had rusted and the paint was holding the side light fixture).

I miss that car!

My mom leased a 3 door in the maroon color (1st pic) in '85. We once drove it to the dealer with me holding the keys in my hand in the pass seat. Once we were in the grocery store parking lot and my mom unlocked the door and it fell off. We took the car in so often that the service manager wouldn't believe that we could possibily have so many problems. My dad lent him the car for the weekend and told him to let his wife drive it. The following Monday we received our lease payments back (all of them) and the service manager had a black eye. :)

My first car is the one that I wish I still had. 1971 Sherwood Green Dodge Challenger with a 318 2bbl. I paid 1800 bucks for it in 1980 and it would eat new Firebirds and Camaros for lunch. Had power windows, AT, A/C, AM/FM thumbwheel radio, a beautiful rim-blow steering wheel, and these chrome trim pieces around the leading edge of the hood that I (now) understand were an exceedingly rare option. Added a rallye hood that I found at a scrap yard for $50 with all of the call-outs intact. I sold it when I couldn't find parts for it, like power window glass. Now look at the price of them...

1965 Chevy Nova, in-line six, three on the tree. I paid $175 for it a year before I got my license. My Uncle lived next door and with his help and my Dad's, (both motorheads) stripped it down completely, pulled the motor and rebuilt it with a three pack of two barrel carbs, headers, higher lift cam and then painted the car Fiat racing blue, put a four speed on the floor along with Crager Mags and traction bars. I used to love hanging out in my Uncle's garage....Made my decision to get into mechanical engineering and definitly was the beginning of my love for cars.

My first car was a 1974 Saab 99LE Combi Coupe (3 door) manual that I bought in 1978 for the same price as a Holden Torana of the same vintage.

It had 2 litre multi-point electronic fuel injected motor and was a great front drive touring car - a friend had a new Triumph Dolomite Sprint at the time and he could not believe its performance and handling compared to his. His was faster in a sprint but on the open raod his ride was far from pleasant.

The 3 door hatch opened to a space that was 6 ft long with the back seats folded down to allowed camping ! ;)

It had suffered a front end smash at some stage so I had to replace the Right front universal joints every 50,000 km.

A very civilised car for its time ! Also well engineered !

I had quite a bit - some of the cars i had i never drove :p

Two of them were actually registered and driven by me legally:
1992 Geo Prizm w. 128k miles on it - sold for $100 got for free;
1991 BMW 525I M50 DOHC :D loovin it

Other cars ive had:
1986 BMW 325E w. ~204k miles on it. I got it for $250, sold for $350
But I did get into an accident in it while it was unregistered, so it cost me about $1k extra in the long run

Not much of a story on rest -
1977 320I w. 127k miles
1995 VW Jetta ~200k miles (Really really bad shape, but it ran and drove and I got it for $200)
1988 Chevy Cavalier Convertible w. 128k miles on it - first car i ever tried working on.. It was sitting for a while and I ended up not getting it to run, since I didnt know what to do at all.

had it 3 months till i wrecked it.
then i bought a 87' nissan sentra, learned how to drive clutch in it, put 120,000miles on it, taught the (now) wife how to drive in it, bought a 89 toyota camry, traded sentra in on our second 89' camry (yes we had 1 maroon & 1 blue toyota's at the same time), second toyota tranny died,
then found my 87' 325e at a used car dealership & worked him from $1000 down to $400, 2 years later bought the 95' 540i/a & gave the first toyota camry to my father.

my wife prefers the 325e 5sp manual over the auto, but i did not teach her how to drive the family 27' model "T" yet.

Oh man, you should make some time for that thing. Not exactly the most advanced platform for performance mods, but stuff is cheap for it and EVERYONE loves them...when I had mine, I got nothing but appreciative looks from girls and nostalgic wistfulness from people older than me...

1972 Vega GT 4-spd. Bought it from my brother in Jan 73 who had bought it new in Oct 71. Fold the back seat down and it was the perfect size for an adventurous college freshman couple! I remember feeling jealous in 1975 when I saw an add for a Cosworth TwinCam Vega that said, "1 Vega for the price of 2!" The mustard-yellow Camaro SS want-a-be finally blew the head gasket so I sold it and replaced it with a '66 Volkswagen Squarerback that I bought from my buddy. He said it was always on the rag...and he was right...I remember driving up 280 from my girlfriends place in San Jose one rainy day with a pair of dirty sox in one corner of the leaky sunroof and a pair of boxers in the other corner! Man, those were the days!

Damn thats about 35 cars ago..Ist car 65 Bug. Bought from an exterminator company(did not have the mouse ears) Used to love to turn ignition off and on in the parking garage at a shopping where I worked at night. The security guards didn't think it was too cool!! Next was a '59 MGA then came a 67 1275 Cooper S. Damn that thing was fast and a great autoX car.

1985 Hyundai Pony.... Got it from my brother who got it new. Always had a couple of wire hangers and duct tape on hand. Cheap as hell but tough as nails. This car was abused and asked for more. When I sold it in 89, both the head and block were cracked but it was still running...

That is hilarious, we are in the same city, and had the same first car./..
PONY, I beat the piss out of it and it was in great shape, but the tranny died at 100k, I used to off road it in snowbanks and other crazy stuff... fun rear wheel drive car for winter!
next was a 80 something daytona Turbo, then a 92 geo storm gsi, then a 94 Nissan Pathfinder LE V6 (brand new), then a 95 VW Jetta VR6 (stolen in 99)
then 325e, then e28 535im, then e34 540, and also now the e46 330.

'87 Nissan 200SX. My parents bought it for me, then tried to tell me what to do with it. So to spite them I took my whopping $1200 I had saved and bought a '79 Chevy PU. Rebuilt engine, made faster by the large number of holes in the body for weight reduction. Christened it the $hitmobile, had some good stupid times in that truck.

1965 Volkswagen Beetle 1200. Funny to see how many of us started out w/German cars. Guess it's something that sticks with you.

After I wadded that one up (damn truck), I got a 1970 Oldsmobile Delta '88. To date, the biggest, longest heaviest car I have ever driven. Rocket 455....back when gas was $0.85 a gallon, we'd spend $5 a night just roasing the tires. Was great for drive-ins too. Especially the $5 a carload nights. Amazing how many teenagers you can cram in one of those.

My first car was a 1978 International Harvester Scout... Man I loved that truck. 304 cid V8 with a 4-speed manual. On the street where I grew up there was a hill, and one day there was a lowered pickup which slid off the side which was a 45° drop. It was wedged up against some trees. I shifted into 4WD Low, and starting off in second gear launched the thing out into the road. I am sure that the guy sitting in his pickup nearly pooped his pants:D That was a very capable 4x4, and I miss it greatly. My wife now knows one when she sees it, because every time I see one; I point it out to her. She even tries to point them out before I can. Ha! At 8 miles per gallon, I don't think I could afford it now:p

started with a 68 Buick Skylark that lacked power and braking ability, rebuilt a 455 engine with a hot cam and put disk brakes on it. Car was amazing, 40mph total third gear 6500rpm burnouts. Car would leave posi straps almost a complete 1/4 mile without slicks on it.

27 years later....I still have her setting around, it is a 1970 Datsun 240-Z painted Porsche guards red.
Not one dissapointment from that car. Inline six with great torque. I put all the suspension upgrades on along with Recaro seats, exhaust,wheels,air damn etc........but the best part were those howling triple 44mm Mikuni's !!!:D

the first was a 1977 dodge ramcharger SE...by the time I got it there was more bondo on it than steel. It had a removable steel top that when removed allowed the frame to flex so bad you could not open the doors. Man I miss that truck

the second I still have, a 1967 mustang coupe. Was my parents first car when they moved to the states. Someday it will be restored

I would alternate driving between both cars depending on whichever one would start that day :)

3rd was a Fiat 131 Mirafiori, I thought I was the only one who owned one until I saw javiers post.

Kind of scary, I have worked on very car posted here so far, and have stories for most, the Saab has the most stories by far. lOl only Saab would use a jackshaft driven water pump that required pulling the engine if the job went sideways.

Seriously, a 1950 Dodge Coronet like this one except dark brown on the bottom with cream top.

got it in 67, when i was 17. i had to sell it a couple of years later to pull together enough money for tuition payments. sure wish i still had it. a honey of a car. and pininfarina's body is what i *still* feel is the all-time most beautiful roadster body ever made. (actually, in my opinion the sprint coupe of that era is no slouch either.)

A Talbot Alpine, a bit like shown below but a "beatiful" custard yellow. The French had designed it so well that the quickest way of changing the oil filter was to take one of the front wheels off.

A '68 Dodge Dart with the 383 and 4Spd. The suspension set up like a gasser with tube front axle,big F'in tires in back, little ones in front,psychedelic paint job and a hood scoop. Definately a period piece,not street legal even then(1972). Many,many since but this one will always be special!

1965 Ford Custom, the fleet version of the Galaxie. Straight 6, three on the three. I killed it quickly and graduated to another of the grownups' castoffs, a 1964 Fairlane, also straight 6-stick. Both were a step up from the car I learned to drive in, and the first car I ever put a wrench to, a 1960 Falcon station wagon. 144ci six, stick.

Dad "and I" did a crude ring job on the Falcon after he bought it and discovered upon arriving at home that the crankcase was filed with 90% Motor Honey. He took the ridge off the upper cylinders with a power drill and emery wheel; I got to crawl under the car and loosen oil pan bolts! I was 11 years old. Forty-one years ago.

Yep, a real genuine AMC Renault Alliance 1.4L 4-speed coupe. My dad bought it new and I drove it the last years of its life, until the repair bill exceeded the value. (The clutch went out after 13+ years of use and abuse.)

My wife had an Alliance -- I contributed to its demise when I did an oil change. There were two oil filters in the aftermarket, one with SAE threads and one metric. The SAE filter seemed to fit fine on the metric threads but worked their way loose. The filter blew off while she was driving it, and she didn't know what to do when the red light came on -- so she just kept driving.

Scamp had an awesome engine in it, Slant 6 if I am remembering correctly. Had it to 110 or 120 once, where ever the speedometer topped out. Amazing how smooth the ride was at that speed.

Had the great big american power steering wheel that allowed one wheel steering.

Started driving in 1971 bought a 1961 VW Beetle, lasted 6 weeks before squishing it, next was 1963 VW Beetle, 1971 Chevelle, (drove it for 12 years) then took a vacation in Germany (1984) and been driving BMWs ever since - '79 320i, '85 325e, '85 528e, and the present '93 525i.

Mine was a 64' Karmann Ghia. I loved that car but my drums wouldn't fit in it so I sold it for a Toyota pickup:( . I knew I would eventually go back to a German made car.:)

My first was a Saab three cyl 2 stroke, (called it my Thalidimide Porsche),,,GD thing would sometimes start backwards,,so that reverse was 1st gear. The seats were torn to sh*t, and all the seat stuffing would come out and stick to you,,,getting out of the car, id look like a flocked christmas tree.
(for the benefit of younger ones here,,,Thalidimide was an old medication given for infertility,,that was notorious for causing ghastly birth defects,,,like being born with only one really short leg, and no arms. Kinda what those old Saabs looked like (newer ones too, for that matter)

First Car was a 1980 320i, bought when I was 17 and it was 14. My favorite episode was when the exhaust broke just behind the cat and I got to drive around without a muffler for 2 weeks!!

The engine and transmission are still sitting in my parent's garage, but I have NO idea what to do with them.

1968 Chevy P/U, Blown 454 w/ Dule Holly 4bbl's. Paid $400 in 1997and sold her for $2600 in 1999 when I got my '71 MACH 1 w/ the 351c... MMMMM I love muscle... I have had many cars inbetween, some nice some not, but now am a BMW guy for life...

That is hilarious, we are in the same city, and had the same first car./..
PONY, I beat the piss out of it and it was in great shape, but the tranny died at 100k, I used to off road it in snowbanks and other crazy stuff... fun rear wheel drive car for winter!
next was a 80 something daytona Turbo, then a 92 geo storm gsi, then a 94 Nissan Pathfinder LE V6 (brand new), then a 95 VW Jetta VR6 (stolen in 99)
then 325e, then e28 535im, then e34 540, and also now the e46 330.

That is funny... Remember when the Pony was everywhere...

Next was a 89 Integra, sold in 97 for a 95 Jetta vr6, biggest piece of crap I ever had, :( sold it in 97 at a huge loss... It was such a lemon that I'm sure if I had been lucky enough to have somebody steal it, they would have brought it back.... God I miss that Acura, it had all sort of stuff from G.T.A., Jackson Racing, Launda and RMR... I'm sure you know the places...

After the Jetta was a 91 Pontiac Grand Prix, winter car wich lasted 3 years, reliable to the last minute, next a 2000 Civic and now the 525. Plus a GSX-R 750 and also 4 old Ford trucks.
