As the title says, I found this e28 while driving around with a few friends a few days ago. I'm kinda toying with the idea of a beater car for when I go to college, so this is something I'm looking for. Surprisingly, the car is in great condition. Not one spec of rust and the interior is in good shape. The paint is in excellent condition, it only needs a good buffing, and would look great. The place where it is located is a joke. I just talked to the owners of the car 20 minutes ago. John Lee Hotti came out and tried to make believe he knew the owner and wanted 1,000 for it. I said the most I would give him is 350 and then he came back and said 600. I said nope and walked away. He said he'll probably "talk to the guy" and he knows the "guy" will accept 350. I know in a day or two, he'll call back accepting my offer. As of right now, the only thing that needs work is obviously the rotor and dust cover. For some reason, the wheels really look good on the car. What do you think??

Does she run? I'd be interested to find out why (apart from the obvious back wheel issue) why it needed to be towed.

They said it runs, but the battery is dead, so I have yet to find out. TOW means the name of the place that owns it (I think), M&M towing.

theres one obvious problem with that car...... the bumpers:p
but seriously if it doesn't start i wouldn't touch it until you've driven it etc. flat battery can be code for......... confusing problem that prevents the car from starting

A 5 speed!!! and a good body!!! and for that price? Did you see the shark pictures at bimmerfest and Rig's note that 90% are autos. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

If you don't let others know where to find her, she'll be going in for a full restore in a flash. If you get her make sure you write-up the 'as found' condition- we'll all be happy to give you a few pointers.

Make sure you look for rust under the bootlid and back window. E12s/28s are bad there, as well as in the doglegs in front of the rear wheel.

Looks very good. Be careful not to buff through, I think I'd cut and polish first and buff later... it really doesn't look so bad at all. :) nick

That's kinda weird and cool at the same time.

What year is it? $350 is beating them stupid on it. If everything's intact, has keys and a title, it's easily worth $1000.

Someone who knows more about E28 wheel options will be able to tell you if the current wheels are worth anything. I think they're TRXes from the pictures. But if they're US, they're worth a good bit of money.

Either way, buy it. You can sell it for more than $350 given that it's not totally hopeless. Especially if it's an '85. Especially if it runs.

I think it's a great car and this particular one appears to deserve more attention than that for "a beater car". It can look particularly agressive with m5 air dam...

If you don't want it, can someone please biff it in a container and ship it to me?

I was kidding about the beater remark. I only meant I would use it to go back and forth to college so the 530 wouldn't get messed up. I would obviously take care of the car and soon as I got it and fix it up to par. I treat any car no matter what condition it's in with respect lol.

I'm not sure if it's lowered or not. Obviously it's sitting real low because of the rear wheel missing, but even when taking that into consideration it still looks like the tires would be close to the fender lip with the 4th wheel installed.

I was poking around under the hood of it yesterday. I was amazed to see how much easier the M30 engine is to work on than the M60 in the e34. While I'm a total newb at the M60 and a little intimidated to work on it, everything on the M30 is easy to access and in plain view. I probably should have went with a 535 for my first car, but the M60 only had 53,000 miles.

I don't know if your state has emissions requirements, but I can tell you that when the cats went bad on my 88 535is 5 speed (I no longer drive her, but she's still my baby) it was a BIG$$$ fix for what others would have called a real beater. Still, $350, how can you really go wrong as long as she runs?

Its funny how it "runs but has a dead battery". Basically, they won't jump it for ya cause it prob won't turn over :)

good luck man

They never said it had a dead battery, I just assumed that because none of the electronics are working inside the car.

I thought the 'usual' cutoff was 15 year old for exemptions for most places...

I'm not sure over here in the U.S. I know some guys that own e21's that still have to pass emissions, so I don't think it's old enough yet.

yea but it's hard to get hurt for $350, so you get it home and the motor is a hunk of scrap and the tranny fell out somewhere on the tow home, ebay it or pimp it on www.mye28.com and atleast get your money back if not double it

oh great! will you consider then m5 style air dam? I also found metric "beer bottle cap" rims a fantastic addition to this car. Brings out a refined, classic aura...

I thought that the "banana republic" style palm grease at a shop would help, but apparently emissions testing is such a cash cow (and these guys get "stung" often enough) that its not worth the $20 to them. Anyway, in NY at least the cut-off is 20 years. Funnily though, I have "friends" who failed their test and have never heard a thing about it from the powers-that-be... By the way, assuming that the head isn't frozen & the block is okay, I've seen that vintage of M30 engine go for $400 bucks or so, so if you're okay doing a bit of wrenching you're almost assured of getting your $350 back.

Another consideration is that if those are in fact TRX wheels, you could have a hell of a time getting tires that fit. Flip side is that there is a growing demand it seems for good condition TRX wheels...

Listen, I wouldn't use TRXs to make a coffee table, but some restoration freaks want em'... I read somewhere that some manufacturer is actually making TRX sized tires, or at least now marketing new old stock...
