You have to wait for the cockpit view (http://videos.streetfire.net/hottestvideos/2/2BE1858E-0944-4017-9C01-BDA530380330.htm)to see the results...

I saw this video a couple months ago. It's either a twin turbo or a very large single turbo e30 if I recall correctly. I didn't watch the movie again, so I could be wrong.

it says 3800 cc, which i would imagine is the engine out of the 540, prolly twin turbo'd. i've seen e30's with that setup before.

I have that video on the server, i like the way he has severe wheelspin and fishtailing at ~140.

I bet he put a TURBONATOR on it. That's how he got that much power.

EDIT - I didn't watch it too closely before... not the same M5 but looks like the same proving grounds, maybe the same guy?

WOW!!!
I have never seen the speedo needle in a car move that fast.
That turbocharger is the size of a basketball!
3.8 is the same size as the late-model E34 M5, so it could be that. Or a bored out M30, which is kinda what it looks like.

Its either an M20 or an M30 bored out to 3.8L most likely the latter because i dont think you can bore out an M20 lke that..

Whatever it is with that much smoke coming out of her I'd say it's in for a short life!

I'd say its one of these- and it would fit in with that poster's comment of 3800cc - ie A late M5 motor (details below).
S38 B38 3.795ccm-Vierventiler fЭr M5, 340 PS, RUV 1992
Obviously it has been charged as well.
This motor is the pick of the crop really- I mean if you wanted to build the world's fastest BMW L6, it'd have to be this motor, blueprinted to the nth degree and running a mother of a turbo setup (Schnitzer used twin turbo KKK27s and got 959hp out of its predecessor- a 3.2l M49/2 running far-inferior engine management to what we would use today... :) Nick

in that case i find quite odd that the intake manifold is from m20. The cross section of the intake manifold runners for m20 is smaller. did the guy port the intake runners all the way to the atrium of the throttle body? highly unlikely... using m20 intake manifold in m30 is therefore highly unlikely and quite meat-headed for that matter... its reasonable to assume that there was simply some miscommunication resulting in providing an idea that the engine is big block whereas it is very likely not...

Clueless questions--what are those things going through the passenger compartment? And what is the thing in the trunk?
And not to be snitty, but after all that he has done to that car, wouldn't you think he could have matching wheels?
But yeah it was amazing to watch the speedo climb. And the sound....

And you call other people newbs??? ;)
The "things" going through the passenger compartment are roll bars in case it flips over, it gives the car structural integrity. That is a fuel cell in the trunk, and he has 2 sets of rims on because he was roasting the tires at 140 mph, so why ruin the good tires on his borbet rims??

Its actually a 3.2l m3 engine,turbocharged..
Made 309 hp on the engine dyno N/A...8:1cr..They then bolted the turbo up and made 900 odd hp..I have a 23min video clip of this thing..Its from Gothenburg in Belgium..trying to find the link......will post..

Its a S38 Turbo built my Andreas @ PPF.
The "smoke" you see is excess fuel. In a high horsepower turbo car you run them rich to cool the cylinder.
It always scares the newbs when my buddy uses 2-step at the track.
If it's an S38, why does it have the m20 intake manifold?

Gothemburg (Goeteborg) is actually in Sweden and the conversation recorded - even though you can only catch a few words - and number plate (even though you only see one letter) seen at the end - are Swedish, IMHO.
Also the shameless plug for the performance shop that presumably did the mods to the engine is in Vaesteraas which is also in Sweden.
To me it looks like an M20 turbo.
Edit : Looking at the video again, to my aged eyes the car that he meets on the turn after the second run looks like a Swedish blue and white Volvo Police station wagon. Could be wrong though but it just gives that impression.

If it's an S38, why does it have the m20 intake manifold?Peeps, I have nfi... never saw a pic of a manifold... Doh, sorry about the confusion- I just saw the 3800cc comment and imagined what they might have shoe-horned in to make it move so damn fast. 900HP charged M3? Well, I guess that'd just about do it....

Any opinions to add ?I suspect s38b38. the page with the vid says 3800cc e30 ... only 3.8 bmw ever made that could put out that kind of power is s38 imo

that is most definitley a m20 with a garret gt42r turbocharger. the s38 doesn't have that intake manifold. that is definitly a huge turbo. That looks just like the gt42r that I want to buy for my setup I bet its a stroked m20 with high compression and alchol injection almost the same setup im going to run in the m30 im building.

i take back my statement. i just watched the vid until the end. thats a m20

yeah I just assumed I knew which are is was - thats an M20 and it's definitely not a GT42R, more likely a Holset HX45 or something... it's got an internal wastegate there... no GT42R goes internal gated.
jjdickm
04-25-2006, 06:49 PM
I assumed it had a remote wastegate but your probably right It just looked like one to me but I am very new to the turbo thing.

The little brass plunger rod in the pic near the fender is the internal gate.

If it's an S38, why does it have the m20 intake manifold?
exactly - it can't. the m20 manifold has smaller runner cross-section, putting this on non turbo car would be already bad enough, let alone a turbo setup that is naturally expected to pump more air in... we cannot expect him to have ported the runners all through either - what would be an advantage then? the only one in having this manifold - throttle body on the side opposite the exhaust. Then of course its just easier to do regular m30 manifold with displacing the throttle body to another side...
claims that this is an m30 engine are just silly. if the video says that it is - that does not mean that it in fact is so, and believing this makes one simply naive...

Claims to be S38 turbo. Certainly sounds like it. I doubt if a bored out M30 to 3.8 litres can rev so quickly. But I could be wrong if internals are extensively changed to make it so. Way too much power for a small chassis....
