How do you Replace the Climate Control Module

Driving along the other day [1992 520i] I noticed smoke coming from the front pax foot area. When the smoke cleared up the Clock/temp/aircon control no longer works and the trip meter resets back to zero everytime the ignition is s/w off.With the aircon it does not dissengage the compressor [had to pull the plug out] What's behind the dash and what's the best why to gain access. Any help out there Thanks :)

If it's like my 91 535i it is pretty simple. I bought a used one off Ebay for less than $50. Included the three side switches and the actual module with the temp controls. It pretty much pops out, unhook the bowden cables and harness, pop the new one in and reconnect everything. Bentley has a bit better detailed process. I look it up if you need it.

I don't know for sure that is your problem though as some of it seems related to the OBC.
