View Full Version : '94 530i Crankshaft position sensor

Car wouldn't start today. It would turn over but not fire. I checked the resistance on the crankshaft position sensor (per the Bentley manual) and it shows as bad. I've had the car since '96. Had to replace the sensor in '01 or '02 and then just last year (about 6 months ago). My concern is that the first lasted about 6 years, the next one lasted about 3 years and this one has lasted just 6 months.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything else that may be causing the sensor to go bad? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It was a genuine BMW replacement part bought from the dealer.

Bentley's CPS spec for the M60 engine I believe is wrong. It is not 1,280 Ohms. It should be something much less. I remember reading it somewhere. It is confirmed by both my engines. I have one (I believe Nikasil inflicted engine) in car and another on the stand. They both register 540 to 560 ohms. Someone who has the M60 engine can veify this.

The cam position sensor does register over 1,000 ohms.

Don't know what to say other than the previous 2 times that this occurred, I checked the resistance on the crankshaft sensor and the readings were in the 560 or so range. Before mounting the new ones, I checked the resistance and they were both in the range specified in the Bentley manual. After installing, the car started right up.

It is easy enough to verify this since there are many 540 and 530 owners. You do realize there is a crank position sensor mounted on the edge of the flex damper, and a cam position sensor mounted on the passenger side bank of the cylinders. The cam position sensor measures 1,280 ohms +- 10%.

I suspect you may have thrown away a couple of good CPS's.

You could be right. However, the fact remains that once I replaced the crankshaft (not camshaft) position sensor, the car started right up.
