Howzit Guys,

Forgive me for being a little ignorant about this. But I am going to change my oil this weekend, with a new oil filter. However, I'm unsure where the hell the oil filter is on the car. I've check the Bentley manual, however it doesn't state where the filter is located on the engine. Checked the BMWE34 site, again it doesn't say where it is.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here, please?

Thanks all.

Have a good day. :)

The 535i has a different engine. Is it still in the same location though?

Look under the exhaust manifold. It's a bit cramped down there, so I remove the battery and tray to gain easier access. Put some rags, a sheet, a garbage bag, the neighbour's cat or whatever under the filter to catch the spillage.

It's in front of the engine i.e. between the engine and the radiator. Looks exactly the same. Don't forget to exchange the O-ring. Should come with the oil filter. I even got a sweet copper doohickey to replace the old one on the drainage bolt. Sweet.

Not necessarily. If you have a cartridge filter, it's in the same place. If you have a spin-on filter, it's under the exhaust manifold. Either way, oil will be spilled. Oh yes, there will be oil.

Just noticed your engine is the M20. Therefore, it'll be under the ex. manifold on the right. M50 uses the cartridge on the left.

Thanks guys, much appericated.

Also, one more thing: I'm going to change spark plugs and the air filter. However due to me owing my old man a little money, I can only do one of these for now. Which one is more important to change?

Thanks!

Go for the air filter - it failing will cost you a lot more. Check it first though, you might get lucky. Mine had more insects in it than a month old corpse.

Well it's a little dirty I think, not too sure on what I'm looking for. I'm just wanting to do a small service to the car. Actually I think I'll wait until next month and just get new plugs and new air filter.

Thanks Guys.

Careful - they can be pricey. But you get what you pay for. My engine idled better, and the exhaust note was more pleasant after I got me a new filter. I think my filter must have been so clogged with crap that it started to choke the intake.

Ya, I know the prices. Will just get one next month along with spark plugs. Around R200 for both.

Thanks hey.
