This time on the freeway with my wife and mother-in-law in the car.
not a good time for "WTF was that?" moment.
Since the first time I replaced the groung wire between the block and the chassis, and thought all was well. But now I am thinking a rely is going bad "Ala LKM"

Definetly check around the battery, connections, fusable link and that sort of thing, if you dont find anything check the grounds. Sounds like a stupid intermittant connection to me.

the fusible link and battery.
The ground does look a little crispy. maybe that's it.

I believe there is also a ground from the engine to the chassis that was fubared on a few cars, they had all kinds of bad stories too.

A short length that jumps from the body the the block.
But I am still wondering why the dash lite up as if I just started the car.

Been there first.
there is no single relay the would appear to intermittantly kill the car.

We had a 3 series that would do this. ( Wonder why I got such a deal at the auction).
After kicking our techs butt's they declared it fixed and I took it on a road trip. At 5 in the morning it started doing this and I finally got off the freeway. An old local guy came up, asked what I was doing and told me a story about a peagot ( not mis-spelled, his pronounciation) doing this. He said the battery had plates loose and would short on bumps or turns.
I changed out the battery and it solved the problem.

Brought a bag of relays along, just in case.
Tried simulate the failure by tapping then removing the various relays, but no luck.
I'll recheck all the battery cables to see if that's it.
Don't supect the battery just yet, it's only 2yrs old and is clamped down so it won't be sliding around.
