if the check engine light is off does the fault code count?

normally, the 'check engine' light is always off but when I do the 5 stomp test, I get 1222. does this only mean something if the 'check engine' light is on all the time??

after a certain number of restarts the code is forgotten. so, if you have a code, it is curent. clear codes and see when it comes back.
