Hi everyone,
I've been reading the forum for a couple of weeks, but I just registered today. I've got a '94 540iA, and I (like almost everyone) want to increase the power of this beast.

The promise is +40hp and +80Nm for the 4.0 engine. Do you think is possible? The guy has good reputation, and in the feedback there are lots of people happy with the chip. But still, I'm not sure...
If someone could give me a recomendation, it would be great.

In my opinion - the EAT Chip - Enhanced Automotive Technology Chip is the chip for the m60 engine. I just changed over from a Jim Conforti Chip to the EAT Chip and the difference is like night and day.
I dont think any chip will yield you 40hp. But you will get a lot more usable torque lower in the RPM Band than you have now. - JT

Thats probably 40hp peak gain. Thats not 40hp on top of your previous peak hp.

That website looks good, but you are probably better off asking the guys on e34.de on what they think. Most of the member here have an EAT chip. There is a link on the top of the screen. (http://www.bimmer.info/eatchips/)
I think The promise is +40hp and +80Nm for the 4.0 engine is too high also.

Yea, I would do a EATS first, and then a Jim Conforti(Turner Motorsports) based chip. The reviews say that it beats the Dinan(not hard) and may match the Conforti. But EATS surpasses the Conforti. And it's the same price as the one you are looking at.
The only reason why I'm using a Conforti chip is because Mark doesn't have an EATS chip for mine.

No, i meant to bold "gain"
I've gone from Dinan to Conforti to the EAT chip.
EAT works best to improve driveability. Both Dinan and Conforti improved in the upper range. The EAT improves it from the lower end, great for street use.

Hmmm...something on those "dyno" runs looks fishy....as I understand it, changing the fuelling map would affect the torque (and thus HP) in some areas more than others. Doesn't it seem strang that the torque curves look like the original curve was just "cut and pasted" a certain number of ft-lbs higher...and the torque axis is stupidly non-linear...look at the 400-450 ft-lb block and the much larger 250-300 and 350-400 ft-lb blocks??? This doesn't sound right at all...the curves are just shifted...are they saying that not only did torque go from 400 to 480 ft-lbs peak, but that at 1100 RPM it also increased 80 ft-lbs?
I wouldn't mind seeing a true dyno printout...

I know Wokke already some years from the German 7-forum, as he had an E32 Alpina at the time. Many members then bought from him.
But do not get mixed up.
big M60-V8 (4.0l) to about 326HP (DIN) and 480Nm
small M60-V8 (3.0l) to about 239HP (DIN) and 320Nm
Here we are talking about DIN HP. DIN = Deutsche Industrie Norm.
And that is already different from other HP's.
And probably he is talking about an increase to 239 HP on the small engine from the German version of 540, which probably has different basic horse power than a US version.

I read what you posted Erich, its hard to beleive the torque will improve 80nm from the chip alone with the 4L engine. From what I understand DIN and SAE are interchangable and to covert kilowats into horsepower you divide by 0.74.

Same here, Kris...well, almost.
There is a very small correction factor to convert DIN H.P. to SAE H.P.
When James Watt dervied what a "horsepower (http://www.web-cars.com/math/horsepower.html)" was, he actually came out to 32,580 foot-pounds/min. This was generally rounded up to 33,000 ft-lbs/min. The "euro" or DIN H.P. is considered to be the 32,580 ft-lb/min, thus one could "correct" the SAE horsepower from 282 H.P. by the 33,000/32,580 factor to arrive at 285.6 = 286 DIN H.P. you see the M60B40 rated as.
Personally I think my EAT-chipped M60B40 is somewhere in the 305/310-net H.P. area, with a noticable torque gain especially in the 2000-4000rpm band.

The Australian version has the same, 210kw/400nm. I think the e34 m5 3.6L has 232kw / 380nm? - I thought the figures were the same for the US versions also.
Just checked it: the German version 540 with the M60B40 engine has originally

the chip for your 530iA is coming soon...finally I'm getting more time but I've been tuning a few cars recently and I've been busy with that but just wait a bit longer and the chip will be ready.

I heard from Axiom Tuning and Brett at Koala Motorsports that the Schrick Cams (if you can find them for the 540) Really dont improve the driveability around town - and can cause some loss in the curve at the low end RPMs. They do improve the high band driving range.
I was discouraged by 3 respected tuners from doing this. I also contacted Korman Engineering down in North Carolina and they also said they werent really worth the effort. So either these guys dont want the work or they dont really deliver what they promise for the costs. - JT

they are mad go over 3000, but under not really, and its best to use in combination with other engine mods, then tune it properly....
so there is a lot of effort involved, and the payoff is good if you are pushing the car a lot.
