View Full Version : Let me hear your tire stories

The next project is to mount some rubber to my e38 basketweaves. They're 16" and the current tires are too fat, from what I've been told 235/XX/16 something or another. From running a few searches I understand that I need 225/50/16 or sometihng around that size for my tires and otherwise they should bolt right up. Here is the question:
What tires are you running now? What is your experience?
I considered some Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's, but I hear they wear quickly, though winfred shed some light on that...
probably they are a little shorter and will throw off the speedo slightly and the shorter tires may not be avalable in the harder longer wearing compound that i used, the 712s come in two compounds for different speed ratings, use to be 149 mph and 186 mph but i think they changed the lower rating to the 130 area, not sure how the faster tires wear and act
Eitherway, I'm looking for a good set of tires. Very brief winters here, maybe 2 days a year of ice on the road so little to no consideration for winter wheels.

i probably put 25k or more on my 712s driving like a ass and they still had some meat on em when i sold the 535, i am planning on putting 712s on the e30's up and coming m-coupe suspension's 17 inchers after i get the bugs worked out in the next month or two

well is there a specific compound that is tougher than the other as you mentioned? I'd just as soon get 712s

the lower speed rated should be the longer wearing, or whichever one that has the higher treadwear rating, the tire rack lists all of the info on their tires

Avon Tech M550 A/S, love them. Cheap too, and #1 on Tire Rack for UHP all season. Great ride, good grip as far as I have pushed them, quiet, great in the rain.

I agree with the Kumho lovers.
Following direction from members, I purchased the lower speed rated 712s in225/55/R16 and mounted them on the e38 baskets. Absolutely no rubbing, no noise, great handling and quiet.
No regrets. Paid @$600 Can. including instal and balancing from a local outlet.

I had the Khumo 712's on my Prelude, the gripped very very well, but I found them to be noisy, I'd often get the wa wa wa at speed. Great value, but a bimmer deserves better I think.

Michelin Pilot HX MXM 225/60/15
Absolutely brilliant - cannot recommend them highly enough.
Quiet, great in the wet, wonderful stability, smooth.
Last set lasted approx 50,000 km.

What the heck. Thats exactly what I'm looking to do.
Did you use spacers?
I own a black e34 535i on sachs kit. What
Hmm looking through tirerack, its not possible to select a particular speed grade..unless I'm blind
