The Yaris nameplate has been available overseas for much longer. Mid to late 90s at a minimum.

Exactly. When I went to Italy and Germany this year, every other car was either a yaris or a vw polo.

So the "yaris" and "fit" seem to be showing up in the US (or at least around here) at the same time .... is that true to europe? Has the fit been there as well?

we've had the echo here for the last 7 years, it has now been renamed to the yaris. and my parents have one, not a bad package. handles like crap though and doesn't feel very safe when on the highway!

My Ex lives in Italy, and has a Yaris/Echo. When she was back here in 2001, she was telling me just how good the yaris was...

Yaris is one thing but the corolla is number 91. In Australia the mighty corolla is suppose to be the king of reliability based on 30 years of proven performance etc.. This shows its less reliable than a lot other crap driving around. I have not heard of half these models as we obviously have a limited selection on our roads.

I can attest to the reliability of the renowned toyota corolla. They can survive the most brutal of punishments with barely a flinch,

I think most people would agree, I have had 2 of them. The thing is, there are other cars that are more reliable, the difference is toyota are probably the best at marketing. They sell the most boring cars in the world, they probably should be selling white goods but the blandness is what makes up for the so called reliability. I think its almost a mind game in some ways, people say "you cant have everything, toyotas dont handle well, dull in every way but it's gonna get me home and hold market value, thats a good compromise". I think toyota play up to that by making a big deal of simple things like A/C as optional on a 40k car. Most other makers at that price tag dont have A/C as optional. Volvo are "boxy but good" so toyota are "boring but above average"

Before you go nuts about the list, I would like to point out a rather grave flaw. It is based on a list from an insurance company, hardly a good representational cross section of the population, as the analyses is based on customers of that company alone. Off the top of my head, here's a short list of confounds - driving style, distance driven p.a., gender (men care more for their cars than most women), geographical concerns (ocean air vs. dry mountain air) etc, etc, which are not stated or possibly accounted for. Ergo, in my eyes, the results are biased. Unfortunately, in what way we shall never know unless someone spends a lot of time (and money) compensating for possible errors in sampling.
