is say they are about the same with only minor problems on both, the m30 is definatly more capable at hauling the semi lardass e34 around but the m20 gets the job done, ether will go 300k miles with regular mantance but you are not working the m30 as hard, both can want some head work above 200k depending on mantance done, the cooling system is a little weak on the m30 and it wouldn't be a bad idea to factor in a new radiator/t-stat/water pump for anything you get as prevenitive insurance because i've seen many a motor killed due to a small part failure

What do you mean by "better?" M20 has better fuel economy. M30 has better horsepower.

Both, I would argue, are equally bulletproof but both are subject to head problems (failed head gasket, cracks, warpage, for example) if neglected and allowed to overheat.

the never say die thread on the diesel site is "ford owns cummins" which they don't (anymore, and it was only a share of the company) if they did they wouldn't be using that bastard navastar 6.0 piece of ****, another would be theres no G in cummins, cummings is a town in georgia and or a porn star name, cummins is a diesel engine company

m30 is better. They are very similar engines in every aspect, but the m30s power makes it better ... m20 is too weak for the car.

with that said, either will go for 300k easily if maintained properly. gas mileage isnt all that different actually since you have to rev the hell out of a m20 525 to go anywhere, whereas the 535 can take a more laid-back approach.

i think you are getting it confused with the arguement about the m20s contempory and the m30so i'll begin the proper revival: M50 is the best engine ever, way better than the m30. :p
i'll come back in a few weeks when this topic blows over;)

M30.......One word "TORQUE"

M30 : 225 ft·lbf torque @ 4000 rpm

M50 : 181 ft·lbf torque @ 4200 rpm

uhhh keep dreaming, take a 300k mile m30 amd a 300k mile m50 and see which one starting to oil fowl the plugs, i wouldn't feel bad about turboing a 300k m30, not sure id bother putting a chip on a 300k m50

Had a 535, then had a 525 12v, I agree that the m20 engine is underpowered sometimes. But if you can find a 525 24v (M50 engine) as I own now, you're much better of. Much less problems than with M20 or M30 engines. Doesn't eat up that much fuel as the M20 although it has +-30hp more

what does it mean when your m50's oil is starting to foul up the plugs?? Let me know....:)

geting old and starting to suck oil, the m50 is a decent motor but it just doesn't last almost forever like a m30
