Need Help

Hey guys,

I posted this in the 7 Series forum, but this forum is much more alive and though you might have some good input on this. I used to own an e34 525i and sold it about a year ago. It was the biggest mistake ever!!! I want another bmw because nothing drives like one. I was looking at a 735iL today and it had 168k miles on it. The interior is in very good shape and motor runs well, just a slightly lympy idle. When I stopped the car after driving it and was looking it around everything checked out ok, but when I got back in and started to drive it again I heard something from under the center console, like the drive shaft was rubbing from underneath as it was turning, like a schu.schu..schu..schu sound, hard to describe in typing. Is this any kind of a known problem? I know the driveshaft is not rebuildable and about a grand to replace. Also the rear passanger break was clicking when I applied the brakes. Any ideas?

my friends 3000GT has the brake clicking thing too

on the BMW its probably the rear pitman arms, maybe lack of retainer clips.

the noise below the center console may be the tranny running dangerously low on fluid, or just the driveshaft center bearing shot.

if it was during turning, its probably the wheel bearings, but that noise would be in a different spot. power steering box perhaps?

I highly suggest you take the car to a BMW specialist for a prepurchase check out. Even for experienced BMW owners that do all their own work, this is a very good idea.

The brake noise could easily just be something simple like its missing the rattle clip or something more expensive, but probably not dangerouse. The driveshaft (?) noise could be potentialy expensive, so worth having a trained ear listen to it.
