View Full Version : putting an 06 m5 engine into an 05 525i ??

Does anyone know if it is possible whatsoever to put an 05 or 06 M5 engine into an 05 525i? The 525i is a pretty large car, but somehow I doubt it has space for the v10 considering it currently has an inline 6....If anyone has any ideas, let me know, as I'd LOVE to boost the horsepower of my 525i. Also, does anyone know anything about smartchips? I don't think one has been released for my car yet...
Thanks
In theory it can be made to fit, but it will be easier to use a V8 car. And the most difficult part is all the electronics and emission stuff. Best is try to find a rolled and see, full transplant.

it would be ridiculous to put it into an e34 530iT. the ultimate sleeper. if you dont want to go with the smg, the m6 is to be released with a manual trans later on. wait til one of those is wrecked. oh to dream.....

Why bother ???
Sell the 525i and buy something faster.

No idea, but a Briggs & Stratton 3.5hp lawnmower engine will fit in there real nice.
I'd LOVE to boost the horsepower of my 525i.
You'll want to put a turbo on that B & S, then...
those are hot pics of the v10.
Why put that v10 in a 525i when you can build this around it ....

Sell the 525i and buy the M5.
Fixed.

Lets start retrofitting that v10 into corvettes in revenge for GM junkies perverting BMWs with small blocks.

Not happening. You need to fully understand what goes on in an OBD2 engine, then multiply that confusion by pi to the pi power... thats the difficulty level.
You'd need:
Engine
Mounts
Transmission (SMG ONLY)
ECU
Trans ECU (if seperate)
SMG assembly
E60 M5 rear end
M5 suspension
M5 rear subframe for rear end
custom drive shaft
custom cooling
custom braking
custom trans mount
custom exhaust
cus...
the list goes on. No.

Put it this way -
On E46Fanatics an MIT engineering graduate turned his E46 323i (Sedan) into an E46 M3 Sedan by installing
Motor, ecu, smg trans, aa s/c, custom shaft, entire E46 M3 subframe, all M3 suspension, exhaust, cluster, all associated electronics, m3 fenders, m3 hood, etc...
It took him about a year+ and he had an ENTIRE M3 donor car.
And that is turning an E46 into a different E46... try doing that to an E34 to an E60...
Why not. OBD I and OBD II is not as hard as you think. Most of the OBD II stuff is already on your OBD I cars and if have the whole car, it is even simpler, but must have a good manual and wire diagram. It is true there will lots of custom parts, but it is not impossible. IDrive is the most complex part of the built, and to understand all the interaction between all the computers and CAN system. In other word, need the whole car.

That's wasn't really the point. The engine in question is a 2006 OBDII compliant engine. He wants to put it in an OBDI car... that is not legal in several states. Additionally, understanding "OBD" isn't easy. Knowing that its present and what it does is easy, but how to bypass certain aspects is not easy. this is the reason that LARGE companies like Active Autowerke and RMS have issues with CEL due to OBDII oxygen sensor polling. If your seriously think understand the E60 M5 motor is "easy"... well, i dunno! But you realize he'd need every single little sensor and electronic bit implanted into an E34. Not worth the time or money - he's even need the gauge cluster to support the dynamic redline. It starts to get ridiculous. For way less money you could hit 500hp other ways.

It would be more cost effective to steam power your 525i and burn $100 bills to fire the furnace... but if you've got at least a spare $50k burning a hole in your pocket....... use it for a deposit on a real M5!

The same guy is now putting an S54 with SMG into an E30. He is doing it by swapping the entire electrical harness from an E46 M3 into the E30 with all the sensors and everything. Take a look

Make sure to read the entire thing, haha, ... I think it is at 40 some pages now but just brilliant to follow what they are doing and the speed that they are doing it.
I guess anything can be done but the time and effort that somebody is willing to put into a project like that is insane.

Funny,
Good eye Paul. In our arrogance, we all thought he was WAAAAAAY off the deep end. Has he been back yet?
This post went further than I thought it would.......

I read the E30 S54 swap- anything is possible - that's the same guy that did it in the E46 323i. I didn't see that he wanted it in an '05 525i. In that case - why ruin a perfectly fine 525? Go buy an M5 it'll prob cost the same in the end.

No, it'll cost more. Way more.

I'm agreeing with Jon on this thread, but for giggles...
A couple of years ago, my boss bought a wrecked 850CSi. All US 850CSis are OBDI, hence all are <= '95, no titled '96es because they're not OBDII (even when there were a few sitting on dealer lots INTO '96). The S70 went into a 1994 Euro 3.8 M5: more or less a physically direct fit -- the subframe and motor mounts are bolt and go, the E34 M5 uses hydroboost (as do all V12 BMWs) so no need to do brake work, off the shelf cooling system and (some) exhaust components were available as well. Still, it took a year and a half in "free" time to assemble the car -- work done by two very knowledgable people. The most difficult part was the wiring harness -- three separate harnesses were made into one. It also wasn't cheap, but the car has a lot of goodies, probably on the order of 30 grand worth of work and parts.
Now, there are wrecked E60 M5s around, but you'll pay a lot to get one. Once one is located and purchased, start fabricating. It's not cheap, and I doubt it's worth it given the alternatives, but that's all up to you.
best, whit
