Don't know if this is common knowledge, or whether peeeps have cleaned this spot before but...
I was tipped off to this by my Dad when he was washing his E34. The seal around the trunk/bootlid collects a fair bit of grime, as does the strip along the bottom of the rear window. Both can be pulled out (although I didn't remove them completely just in case...), and the grime can be sprayed with some cleaning solution, then wiped away, or use a toothbrush. The white clips you can DO move, and aren't that difficult to remove or put back in...
The pics below (sorry if they are too big) show where the grime was. I decided to let you all know, as it could be a possible spot for future rust. :(
