i read on one of the past threads that 18s its the biggest size one should put on our cars. why is that? does it rub the wheel well if its any bigger? will i lose stability with 20s? i dont want to lose to much power if there heavy but im not out there to race either. i would research this my self but...im a busy man. :D

19's are alright, ride quality would suffer terribly. 20's are just too big and will screw up your front end unless you take preemptive measures- read thousands in suspension upgrades and ****....

I was out and about in the “hood” and seen some pimp’n rides with outrageously large wheels.
These were domestic autos, for instance a late 70’s early 80’s GM type. I certainly didn’t stop and ask the wheel size however I believe they were 20’s or larger.
The cars looked silly and made me believe the owners were not very intelligent. I realize my assumption is based strictly on the fact that I’m getting to be an old fart and I somehow cant relate to this wheel size thing.
My advice is some 15 inch bottle caps with whitewall tires.
Man, do they still make deep dish Cragar S/S wheels, they'd be **** on an e34. LOL

I think stacks would be more desireable than side pipes :) And how about a built-in crack pipe in the dash?

You girly man!! :D
36"s on the front 48"s on the rear and a chrome plated partridge in a pear tree on the hood! :)
P.S. I'm currently eyeing off a set of 72"s.
Either that or a set of llama skin seat covers.. with rhinestones of course! :p

As the pancake said...
expect issue after issue with front suspension.
These cars were designed for perfectly-weighted, perfectly sized wheels designed specifically for the suspension. It sounds stupid... But this suspension is said to chuck a spaz when bigger, non-E34/genuine wheels are added. Ask ANY of the guys on the forums here with non genuine rims, especially 18s, as we ALL suffer/have suffered in the past the dreaded "80mph shimmy"... Short of replacing every bush and joint in the suspension, there is no remedy. Except using genuine BMW 15-17in rims.
20s would look ****ing awesome if done properly, but the ride quality will be woeful, the suspension life will be worse, and you'll forever be getting the buckles removed for hitting potholes (I don't care how good you 'think' you are at dodging them!)
You want some damn sexy rims that are gonna be a few $$grand?? Get some Hamann HM-2s... *drool*

+1 20s on an E34 = gay. If you have a real hard-on for playing the ghetto bigger is better game, go with an E38 or E39, they pull off the 20s a bit better (but still not well). For that matter, I can't think of a single car I have seen 20s on that look all that good, and I'm not even that old yet (26).
Better yet, f-it all and just get some spinners.

20" on e38 is fine. I've seen 22" on the new 7 series....

Still looks too damn big. There should at least be a little tire. To me the huge wheel look just screams wanna-be rapper/thug. Plus, in very few cases does it have any performance advantages, usually it just makes your car ride like ass.

HAHHAHA, that velvet jones skit is hillarious.. 'be somebody, be a ho!'
but yeah, i wouldn't even do 18"s, i have 18x8 all round and it's a rough ride, i would do 17" if i replaced these.. 17" is a better look for the car too

I have only been a member since March.. BTW, this is a terrific site! Anyway I have seen several posts on 20” or greater wheels … ultimately the originator of the post incur the wrath of many. I detect a pattern.

generally we are all in consensus that 18" is the biggest. some think that 17" is the way to be. a few, myself included, are up for the 19" format. i mean if you're building a dedicated show car, you could do whatever the hell you want. but for a daily driven car, 18 or 19" will kill the ride quality, and doesn't it make your gas mpg go down as well? either way, i plan on getting a set of summer wheels that will be 19". winter beaters will be the basketweaves...

if twenties float your boat do it! at least it will be unique.
i saw my old e34 turbo 535i the other day at the suspension shop and it has 'twenty twos' on it already. way too big? probably. rough ride? probably.
the tyres are so low profile from a distance you can't see them.
they were modifying the front suspension so that he could actually turn a corner without ripping a guard off - which i suspect you will have to look at also.
good luck!! (http://forums.eurocca.net/showthread.php?t=15955)

18's on mine actually aren't too bad. Yes, the ride is a bit different from stock, but after replacing shocks & thrust arms, (which needed to be done anyway), the ride feels much better than I remembered with the 15's. Plus the look is killer! Especially when dropped just right. I wanted to do the 19's or 20's myself, but the way this handles with these 18's, i'm sooo satisfied!

18s were factory fitted to M5s, and I run Forged MPars, no ride problems on my car since they are balanced properly. I would never run anything over 18s on these cars from what I have read on every single board with knowledgeable people.
Half of the beauty of BMWs, particularly the 5 series, is how excellent the balance of roadholding, handling, and ride quality is. Don't make Klaus und Jurgen spin in their graves by putting bling ass wheels on the car that ruin all of the engineering behind the car.
If you care about bling, get another car as you've clearly lost the plot by purchasing a 5er.
