I'm checking out the ohms across 1 and 3 on my ICV. I'm getting 42.4 on the 200ohm setting, and I'm getting 22.2 across 1 and 2, and I'm getting 20.4 across 2 and 3. I need to clean the ICV, but would like to know if everyones numbers are close to mine. It's an 89 535i M30, auto.
Thanks in advance
1-3 40 +/- 4 ohms
1-2 20 +/- 2 ohms
2-3 20 +/- 2 ohms
Looks like you're within specs.

the tps or throttle plate may be out of adjustment, if the tps does not tell the computer that the throttle is closed the computer will not activate the icv, a dirty test for the icv is to ground the center pin of the icv and tap battery voltage to one and then the other outer pin, one opens and the other closes the icv

Is there any test like that for a 20-pin ICV? Or any value of what the resistance should be?

Thanks guys, I'll do the testing and cleaning today and give an update.

20 pin what? on what flavor of car? the idle control valve on these cars has 3 pins and most of the throttle position switches are 3 pins also (535 autos have several more pins for the tranny computers use)

Cleaned the ICV, throttle body, MAF, and all intake tubes. I adjusted the TPS also. My idle has smoothed out some, but still just a tad rough. I now have another problem. I seem to possibly have piston slap?. Let off the throttle, and tikkity takkity. Goes away under load, and does not happen at idle. I Still have the tapping on the bottom half of the engine also. I'm going to be pulling the oil pan off next weekend, and checking the oil pump. Possibly replace it. Do the bolts come loose on the M30 pumps also? Also would the knock sensor do this? Thanks for the help guys, it really made a difference on how I approach diagnostic on my car. This is a pretty simple car to work on. Thanks again

never seen a m30 pump get loose and the b35 engines oil pump relief valves don't crap out like the older ones and give you low pressure. no knock sensor with motronic 1.3, that didn't come out till 3.3 (i think) on the vanos m50, would of been cool if they kept the m30 around for one more softwear upgrade. loose torque converter bolts maybe? bottom end problems are rare on m30s espcially something weird like piston slap

Sorry I meant to write 2-pin ICV. As you see from the pic my car has a 2-pin ICV.

In supplement there is "2 Pol", which means 2-pin.
2 litre M50 engines seem to have 2-pin ICV.

ahhh never seen one of those fat bastard 2 pin jobs on a bimmer, if it's like the one on volvos (it looks like it) it's spring loaded to close and power opens it

Does it mean the spring will become weak with time and not close the hole fully when required?

possible, usually it's crud slowing it down that needs to be sprayed out with throttle body spray

What could be its ohm (resistance) reading? Mine had about 10 ohms. Considering that the 3-pin ICV has 20 ohms (1-2pins) and 40ohms (1-3pins) reading, isn't that too low?
Try looking it up on the Bosch website:
http://www.boschautoparts.com/Global/Search
Then pull up the spec sheet if it's available.

That site is a little crappy. Search yields absolutely nothing.
It just lists idle speed stabilizers as products available, no further info.. :(

How do I know that? Realoem shows lots of things:

drawings (http://www.e34.de/tips_tricks/schaltplaene/1210_10/04.gif) show a single solenoid controlled ICV, so I wouldn't be surprised coil is OK (10 ohms) as it is spring loaded, and then heavier to operate.
Should be totally closed wile de-energized, and open when energized. Winfred already told you.

MS40, is it Siemens? How do you know its MS40? There is also one marked as M3 3.1.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HB51&mospid=47370&btnr=12_0886&hg=12&fg=10
How do you know its not this one?

Have not seen DME 3.3.1 in any Europe drawings (http://www.carsoft.ru/avtorepair/bmw_e34/E34.html) page though.
Javier
Edit: Yes it is a Siemens unit. Here (http://www.e34.de/) is some info on it.

OK, thanks for the help.
Where exactly on www.e34.de is that info located? I am afraid I don't speak German so its difficult for me to find that info by myself.
