I live in the Dandenong Ranges about 50kms (30 miles) east of Melbourne.
Lyrebirds can occasionally be seen when hiking through the forest.
However their population has markedly decreased thanks to feral cats which kill a great deal of native wildlife.
Even domestic cats are a problem here and many want to see a total ban on cats in the hills. A good cat is a dead cat!!

I second all that as I live in the same area and feral cats do cause heaps of dead native birds. The really stupid thing is the idiots who say "oh I know cats kill birds, but mine doesnt". There is a law of no cats after 8:00pm but no one gives a damn (among cat owners). Very frustrating. So yes, kill all cats, foxes, pigs, goats, buffalo, toads, rats, horses, camels as the early settlers had the foresight to let all these animals in our country each with its own devistating outcome!
