I've been doin a few minor mods to my E34.

Have a look and tell me what you think.

What do you think of the rear boot lid garnish?

The clears are alright, do you like the fit? What type are they? How are the edge and boot seals on the rear assemblies (are they Depos?) :) Nick

All Genuine BMW Nick.

The fit is exactly the same as the old ambers.

The garnish looks darker than the lamps but it's just the effect of the camera's flash everything is a perfect colur match.

I've got new fog lights comming soon too that look pretty trick.

The rims are new too.

Wanna see a spotless engine bay?

Engine bay. Daily driver (500km per week)Sweet mate and I was thiking they looked as good as Depos. The seals are reason enough alone to spend 3x the price on Hellas. The bay looks sweet, but perhaps you (like me) are missing the fabled throttle body cover? I understand it delivers 3% more hp from improved insulation and the resulting fuel atomisation... but then again perhaps BMW only fitted it to later builds... Are you swayed by BillionPa's wisdoms on replacing the charcoal canister? The thread is here... I don't know anyone in Aus that replaces canisters- it seems against the fabric of our Kyoto kissing existence. :) Nick

I can't see any reason to change the canister, purge valve maybe if it ever fails but never a cannister (charcoal doesn't wear out afaik!).

I've never seen the throttle body cover listed on my ETK (just checked the isn't one listed for my vin#). I can't see how it would improve anything in our climate, maybe it helps to heat the TB in sub freezing conditions, don't really know.

My lights cost me around $500 for all 6 lamps (I did the side repeaters too).
But remember I'm a parts interpretor at a dealer, from memory the rears are around $200 something each.

What brand are your rears?

I was kojing about the TB cover ;).... I have Depos :p and for the record I believe billionpa on the canister enough to buy one. They can let air allow condensation in the petrol tank and perhaps incorrect operation, I don't have the exact details handy but I think it was in that thread. Cheers, :) Nick

Yeah..... there HAS to be a way for air to enter the fuel tank.......otherwise it would suck flat (especially the plastic tanks!!) no fuel system is truely 'sealed' usually the cannister has a one way valve to allow air to enter but stop fuel vapour from escaping to the atmosphere.

For the record I've NEVER sold a Purge cannister for any reason, other than smash repair jobs, in my 16 years as a parts interpretor. Also I've never sold a fuel tank to replace a rusted one either!

I'd be suprised if your cannister was available from BMW AUS, I'll bet it's back ordered X-Germany.

I think the plate surround looks great on your car. mine had one on it when I bought it but I trashed it along with the ///M badges the PO put on the grill and boot. They were pretty lame looking and the surround was cracked and worn looking. I wasn't wild about the looks of it on a black car anywhat...

I just put a new fog in to replace a broken one (thanks again to forum member Pgrindstaff) it looks new and makes the old one look like it was sandblasted, might have to get one for the right side now.

Your car looks great!

I'm having withdrawals waiting for the shop to call to tell me my car is done. Having resistor on aux fan done hopefully NOT the whole fan...
Gotta drive the Volvo in the meantime...it's a great car, runs great but doesn't hold a candle to the handling and braking of my OLD BMW.

You need to lower the front corner of your hood just a bit.

Done already.... I was playing with the latch 'stirrup' just before taking the pics (the whole front edge was raised by about 3 mm compared to the guards).

First of all, the car looks great! Good work.

But, if you want to get that Cosmoline (spelling? - you know, that yellow stuff) off your engine head, a friend of mine turned me on to a trick.....use Coleman lantern fuel. That stuff is tough to cut through, but the lantern fuel is a great solvent. Just don't smoke while doing it.

in regards to replacing the canister, it picks up contaminants over time, and the volatile chemicals in the gasoline slowly eat away at the charcoal over 150000 miles. mine weighed about half a pound more than the new one when i removed it, and i doubt thats gasoline weighing it down!

Checked my sales history at work today and we haven't sold an e34 cannister in the last 5 years! (seriously)

We have sold a couple of purge valves though.

The carbon will absorb water from the atmosphere though (hence why they're mounted under bonnet where it's nice and toasty) maybe that's why yours is heavy?

and there is no valve going backwards to the gas tank, so water from the canister can get to the tank.

Same as every other carcoal adsorbtion evaporative emmision system I've ever seen (although some use a vacuum operated purge valve)...... I can't believe so many manufacturers and mechanical engineers get it wrong over & over........ All they need do is check in here from time to time to get all the FACTS! :p

BMWCCA get 10% off, but I can't afford to join :) it's kinda a rich kids club ;)
