e34 CD Changer Error

I have a 1990 e34 535i with a 6-cd changer in the trunk (the kind you see selling on Ebay all the time. It was working fine today until I tried to change CD'd while it was playing a song. All I get now is "Err' when I try to play a CD.

I re-loaded the cartridge, tried hitting the reset button, checked the fuse and tried different CD's...am I missing something? Does the unit need cleaning? I don't know the last time it was cleaned because I just got the car.

I havent sent mine yet but I plan on it. Appartently it needs serviced when the Err code is displayed. I'm not sure EXACTLY what the prob is though. Hope that helps some.

OK, that said, is there an relatively inexpensive cd changer out there that I could replace this with, maybe one that can read MP3's?

Does the CD changer have to be one built specifically to match the stereo system or are the pretty generic and interechangable?
