View Full Version : Sunroof won’t close all the way and seems misaligned

I don’t know how it happened. So far I have removed the headliner from the sunroof support panel (It needed to come off anyway!) Unclipped the two clips to unattach the sunroof from the lining holder (step 2 in Bently).

Front seems misaligned

The back of the sunroof won’t go into the up raised position either.

The Bentley’s manual outlines that an allan key for each side goes in the rails of the sunroof. Figure 5.

Do the allan keys just stay there or do you move them around a bit. I’m a bit lost on this. I tried for a few hours yesterday but didn’t get far :( Must I adjust the screws do get the sunroof aligned again? Figure 6. I know the manual says do this but I can't see how it will change the alignment. All help appreciated.

looks like figure 3 is the adjustment, get the thing straight with the allens by turning? I dont read where you loosen or tighten anything to hold it in position tho.

Exactly. When you insert the allan key the sunroof is locked in preventing adjustment. Then the screws are the only adjustment. Is that right?

This is how it looks inside.

Thanks Bill. I'll give it a go.

Is there a chance that the sunroof is just in need of lubrication vs. out of adjustment? Also, did you try opening/closing it with the engine running? The extra voltage might help.

I'd try the adjustment option as a last resort if it's something that shouldn't "just" go akilter. I'd make sure all the parts are operating smoothly first.

If I remember correctly, I never used any wrenches to lock anything into position. I just figured out about how much I needed to move it, loosened the screws, moved the outer panel, tightened the screws, then used the switch to close the panel. It took a few times to get it right, but it's been fine ever since.

Grace and peace,

I'm still having trouble with it. I can't reach the rear screws and the sunroof panel won't go up allowing me to access them.

I meant to update a while ago. Unexplainably the sunroof adjusted itself into position again. After about the 5th day, and maybe 50 times opening and closing the sunroof it went back into alignment perfectly. I don't know how.

At Home Hardware they have silicone spray. It is like Mister Sheen but better as a spray on lube, not a silicone polish. Thsi is the only stuff one should use to lube a sunroof otherwise it will pick up debris.

It is what the sunroof manufacturers reccommend- and they say a sunroof needs cleaning and re-lube every year.

Cost like $2.50 a 500g can on special.

Mercedes dealerships have a sunroof lubricant that looks like petroleum jelly but holds up to heat. Sunroof mechanisms get really baked, and the heat dries out the lubricant.

In the States we have a product called Sil-Glide -- it's a light-colored silicone grease. The maker claims it'll hold up to 400 degrees F. (I just dug a tube out of the garage to make sure I was thinking of the right stuff.) That's the kind of lubrication you want to use on a sunroof. Liquid spray lube can be effective to clean up the residue from worn-out grease but you want something more viscous to maintain the mechanism.

Thanks Graybeard. I lubed the sunroof with wd-40 but I also have some silicone spray like mentioned earlier. There was hardly any grease there when the sunroof went back to normal.

I had this problem a few weeks ago, turned out to be some random pieces of plastic broke off something and were blocking the black bar in the front of the sunroof from going down all the way. You might wanna dig around from the top of the sunroof.

Also liked Amanda Vanstone ! :p Good ol' Crikey! I'm glad someone put that together, the similarities are too close for comfort.

I think they were being polite to Amanda. Speaking of which, where did Jabba go after the filming of Star Wars exactly??
