Anybody ever done it themselves or had it done?
Not due just yet, but may consider it as a future project as my mileage is getting astronomical - now 215k (miles)
Tricky, expensive I imagine.
Any idea of costs involved? For engine and or 6 speed manual rebuild?
I have heard £800 for a single head skim mentioned...

Maybe a younger mileage replacement is cheaper?

I dont think you can buy parts for that 6speed tranny so aslong it is working let it be.
The engine will cost you loads too to rebuild.
Check the parts prices yourself, if you dare...

i am currently rebuilding my 3.0 m60. the answer to your question really depends on how extensive we are talking. i am replacing all gaskets, misc rubber parts, bolts, etc. i bought the performace head gasket (1.74 is standard, 2.04 is hi performance...both bought from the dealer) for 95 each(obviously you need 2) the standard version is 79. the gasket set was 293, total including shipping and vor is between 450-500. The gasket set includes all the gaskets and various misc. parts excluding the actual head gasket. my valves, pistons, and cam shafts look good so im not doign any work to them. prices varry from location to location, but i would expect at least 450 in any area for the parts i metioned. if your planning something more in depth than what im doing you may want to consider a new engine. ive seen 4 liter m60 engines on ebay refurbished for about 2k. good luck, post pics when your done....

I drove a 88 535i to 235,xxx miles. missed oil changes all the time and only changed the spark plugs once at 133,000 when I bought it. The air filter was the only part I really changed just because of the ease and inexpensiveness of it. When I sold it, car still ran like a dream and DID NOT burn any oil, however the brakes were in sad shape.
