::.. Under cowling... need it? Part number?
Stop at the mall, come out and notice the cowling is hanging on by a screw :| Well without anything to work on it there, I just cut it/tear it from that screw. Heh. Now I see where that oil she's leaking is going to!
Anyway, is this a part one would actually shell money out to replace? ...even if from a junker perhaps? Anyone find the part number for this guy?

I got mine fron BMA for about 40 bux, this stops mud/water/animals from splashing up into the alternator, CPS, belts etc....its definetly a desired part.

What he said.
I was running the M5 without the belly pans during a repair - hit a puddle and the power steering went out as the belt slipped. Safety concern!
Ok. I'll put it on stands and see if I can't repair it... Jeff, you have a part number or how did you ask for it at BMA?

later e34s with M50 engine may not have with the under body shroud as the serpentine belts were not as affected by water as the thin older belts. At least I read that somewhere.
Mine's gone too! Funny thing, every car came with one but not many appear to remain, in this group at least.
Thanks for the reminder to spend more $$$

I replaced mine last week, disappeared after I swapped in the new drive line this winter. Had a huge rain storm that night, so it was a good move.
The 535/525 use a different part than the M5/540/530, to account for an alternator cooling duct on the latter. They could be interchanged, but it doesn't make much sense. Can't find the part number for the one for my 535 at the moment, but it cost about $40.
Also, for what it's worth, some early E32s have another metal plate that extends back to protect the transmission (manual cars) that should also fit the E34 for the ultimate in underbody care.

Mine is chewed up as well, and about an hour monkeying with it convinced me that once the mounting holes are chewed/twisted it is difficult if not impossible to make any repair that would withstand the impact of a dixie cup. Part number from Real OEM is 51711938182 (for my build date, 11/88), $52 at Pelican, but haven't pulled the trigger yet as I'm putting together another massive order...
Thanks. I'm ordering it from BMA.

Yes, when you use the part cross-reference feature (at realoem.com)...and input the part # for the engine compartment screening for the e34 (BMW #51 71 8 147 355)...you get the list of all the BMWs that use that same part...and you get a list of e34s & e32s. When you look up the diagrams for the the e32 750i/iL...it displays the part number for the hex screw & body nut needed to secure the screen at the rear end. :D
Click the following link where I've already input the screen's part nbr into the part cross reference feature...and you'll see the list of other BMWs that use the same screen...click on the "Details on E32" link and then choose any of the 750i/iL diagrams and you'll see the part nbr for the hex screw & body nut: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=51718147355&showus=on&showeur=on
