I have one in the E32 750, sits behind the glovebox compartment. If you follow the plastic chute from the IHKA to the e-box, you'll find it. Sits behind the carpet in a black plastic box. Can be disassembled from the cabin when it starts singing/chirping like a bird.
Costs around 50 $ and looks like a fan for a PC.

Which cars?
Not sure mine has one. If so where is it located?

Is the fan an inlet or exhaust - does it suck into the ebox or exhaust out of the ebox?

I think it blows cabin air into the ebox.
Jeff's 90? 535 doesn't have the fan.

That is clear, it blows cold air from the aircon into the box. Has 2 speeds and in the e-box is a temperature feeler. Always blows, 2nd stage at 44 degree celsius.

Wow that is interesting Shogun - they are airconditioning the ECU box? That's going to introduce moisture without a doubt. I saw that there are "blanks" in the rubber sealing around my ECU box but I didn't know what would go there. Looks like I may throw a little 60mm fan in there for some added cooling.

air thats cooling the box. Unless you have a humidity controlled prius.:)

Heh yeah but sometimes when I'd use the AC in the hot muggy summer days, when the cold ac air met the hot sticky cabin air it'd blow fog out of th events.

If the air is really cold, moisture could condense on the electronics.

drains out through the drain hole. Air after passing through the evaporator is dehumidified and chilled. The cold dry air then gets pulled into the ebox by the fan where it can absorb some of the moisture already present in the ebox if there is any. That air then goes back into the cabin and if the air is on recirculate gets pulled through the evaporator again, chilling down and depositing its moisture that it picked up on the evaporator starting the cycle over and over.
If the air is really cold, moisture could condense on the electronics.
