I knew my car was a gas guzzler but COME ON!

alright, so im driving back from parry sound. ( about 2 hours from where i live) and i notice that my gas is getting lower every 3 - 5 min. and its a noticable difference. I was averaging speed of 120. but the gas just seemed to be poooouring out.. got home let my car sit for a good 2 hours. Checked for a leak, Nothing that i could see. Ill check again in the morning. Soo what the hell is goin on. i Bearly made it home from parry sound. One the drive to Parry Sound , gas was great. so im really confused.

anyone take a guess???

Maybe fuel filter, dirty injectors, not sure...

@ 120mph,....I get something like 8mpg or less.

120 MPH??... wow!.. If that is correct, then your car should have sucked down a lot of fuel.

Basic aerodynamics. The resistance to air starts to grow expedientialy after 40 MPH. That is to say it takes a tremendous amount of power to push a car at 120 MPH.

For example it takes an average of 8 – 10 HP to propel an auto at an even speed on a flat surface @ 35 MPH. Once you pass the 40 MPH threshold the power needed to push the car increases. The required increase in power is non linear and if plotted it would resemble an expediential curve. A quick estimate on an e34 indicates it requires about 124HP to move the auto at 120mph…. incidentally it would require 576hp to move the auto at 200 mph.

My math could be off a bit but the physics are real.

So you drove at 120km/h for four hours, its 480km.
My 535 would drink ~50 liters during such trip and thats only if i dont stop or pass traffic but if i did i would consider ~60 liters.
But from your post its not really possible to understand how much fuel yours drank.

at 120KPH, the OBC reports using about 9L/100KM. I find that to be the optimum speed to run at. 100KPH sucks just under 10. Watch the OBC for the numbers... Test 7 for the MTL I believe.

just another thought, does the car idle fine, start up fine? Might be a leaky injector, or a way past due fuel filter.

car has hunting idle when it feels like, starts fine. fuel filter most deffinately is the first thing then

Yep,,blame the wire eating weasels or martens. After they eat your wires, they head to the gas tank for a long drink.

Yea, something's up, J. I've been getting 9.1-9.2L/100km at 120km/h with my 540. Time for plugs, filter, O2 change?

Try driving at 140mph for a sustained period. You can actually watch the fuel gauge move down the scale as it sucks the juice. :D

As for 120kmh, thats about 70mph? I don't usually drive that slow, but at a guess about 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank for 2 hours continuous. At 85-90mph for 4 hours I get about 260 miles to 7/8 of a full tank. That's the thick end of £60 for 4 hours entertainment......

<EDIT> Just returned from a 120 mile round trip, averaged 90mph all the way - used less than 1/4 tank.
