Which car would you buy....

...for your mother? Seriously. I've been commissioned to find a Bimmer for mom and I've found two that I'm seriously considering.
This one I have NOT seen yet....

And the other I have seen. It's a '95 525iA, 102K on the clock for $7800. Keeping in mind that I've already had the 525 inspected by my mechanic who told me that I wouldn't find a better car for that price, and I own one and am familiar with working on them, etc.....I'm leaning towards this one.

Just to let you know, my mother drives literally about 5 miles a day to and from work. Hopefully a BMW would inspire her to drive more.

A 525 for a 5 mile trip????That will kill the car in short order.....If its suburban stuff why not a honda civic or toyota corrolla........

with the proviso that it is suburban stuff.....the cvic will use half the petrol and be much easier to drive park maintain......for civic you could substitute any japanese 1600 to 2 litre car..nissan toyota honda....mind you the suv/ truck numbers are still quite low here....but my wife hates my 535 mainly due to its size.....

I agree with Paul, get her a Honda or a Toyota, boring but she is less likely to be stranded than with a high mileage Bimmer.

yup if no aversion to Japanese cars which there is in the Motorcity where I live (Detroit) get her a Camry or a Honda. Bigger is safer..you only have one Mom. Downside with new BMW's is cost and downside of old BMW's is cost (cost of time, knuckle skin and new parts)...lol. "You" personally will have more free time if you get your Mom a Toyota or Honda...versus an aging BMW.

I am more concerned about safety than engine... if for some reason they get into an accident... which has a favorable outcome? I would say BMW is better than Honda.

agree with you Tiger....in a crash a BMW wins....partly due to structure but mostly due to weight or mass. Most noteable example of crash worthiness not telling the story on which car is safer is the so called NHTSA star rating. Will take a 3 star SUV over a air-bag infested 5 star rated Mini cooper any day of the week. Occupant protection has come quite a ways in recent years however making smaller cars much safer. Still mass rules on the street.

Mass is part of the story George... I agree. Center of gravity is also another issue which is why SUV fares worse when it gets into an accident involving rollover... most SUV is truck and even though may have alot of airbags... protection is not as good as car.

A mechanics approval is always good, but 7800 for a 525i seems like a bit much. If I were shopping for an e34 today, I'd look into a 535i and be more concerned with mileage than with age.

sorry Tiger but you are wrong. You join the hoard of people that malign SUV crash protection. SUV's are among the safetest vehicles statistically in crashes...in part "due to their high center of gravity". Statistically small cars submarine under SUV's creating small coffins. SUV occupants generally walk away. It is high belt line and CG and overall vehicle mass that makes them statistically among the safest vehicles out there. Roll over crashes account for a very small percentage of overall crash scenerio's...high CG or not. I am an expert in FMVSS and know alot about crash performance. What I do for a living.
