Identifying tranmission ZF vs GM

There are both types (ZF & GM) installed, right? Is there an easy way to identify the type of tranny w/o going under/dropping the tranny? Maybe something in the VIN?

unusual like that with maybe a jatco trans. If its a US e34 535ia its a ZF.

Bill is correct...but you can get some info about your car by using this VIN decoder: http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

Just type in the last 7 digits of your car's VIN and you'll get some interesting info about it. ;)

I'm assuming here - that vin decoder is for US market cars only?

I put in the last 7 digits for my 535ia, and it tells me it's not a 535 at all, infact it is:

Went to the site and found its a "4HP-22/H".n This model number applies to both GM and ZF, yes?
