View Full Version : Why does this combination of codes come up? P1397, P1622, P1529

I know that 1397 is Exhaust Cam Position Sensor Malfunction, 1622 is Electric Thermostat Control, Final Stage and 1529 is Exhaust VANOS Solenoid Electrical Fault.

Does anyone have any ideas why these would show up together?

I forgot to say. The car is a 1999 328i

id clear them and see what if any come back, none of those really are connected and all are usually hard faults, not like a 02 sensor control or misfire code which points to behavior instead of a bad part

Is the cam position sensor a common fault? Is it easy to fix?

reboot the computer and see the next code as Winfred says, could be a fluke.

Same code keeps coming back. Does that mean that the cam position sensor is bad? Where is this thing?

if it keeps coming back it's probably bad, the cam sensor/sensors read off the sprockets in front of the head

Please note you are also on a board with mostly e34 [1989-1995] 5 series cars. Go to the e46 board and I think you will have a lot more luck finding an answer or someone who has experienced this themselves.

please note some answers are from actual mechanics with experience on other than just E34s

I think the part is around 80 bucks from BMA

So, is it easy to install? Does anyone have a link to diagrams or anything that tells where it is?

thanks! So, the "pulse generator" in that pic is the cam position sensor?

random document, cropping it with photshop, shrinking it to an attachment size, then posting it as an attachment, just to mess with you.;)

Yes, the pulse generator is the cam position sensor.

Well, that looks easy.

If that sensor is really bad, does the car usually have any symptoms? This car is running fine.

in some cases you may hear more injector noise when a cam sensor dies, but usually they run about the same

sorta like some of my customers, i go spend 10-20 minutes pulling a part for them and the first thing outta their noise hole is "is one that good" NO **** STICK IT'S A TOTALLY USELESS HUNK OF SCRAP i just thought it would be fun to screw with you and i had some time to kill
