I was wondering if filling the 5 speed manual tranny with gear oil would be better for it if its driven hard. Does anyone know? Right now its got the atf sticker on the side and its full of atf. But I don't know when it was last changed so i thought id change it.

DUDE! what colour is your tag. i asked the redline people about what oil they recommend and i got the motorsport manager asking about what colour tag i have. so i got under the car with a mirror and its orange.
so i inform her, she tells me it should be red or yellow...... is this a euro bmw thing or is she a moron?
and i want to know what he's asking as well.

Some manual boxes run Dextron III or equivelent, some run light manual trans oil.

I'm Running Redline ATF (dextron III Equiv.) in my 535 manual box, It's been in for 2 years so far.

Apparently you can run Redline Light weight shockproof MTL also and I will be going to this in the next month or so. I'll report back on how it goes etc.

The gearboxes have stickers on them which specify which oil was used as the factory fill (same with the auto's...Black or Green labled).

How difficult is it to flush out the tranny? As simple as an oil change?

it just says "aft oil" on the side ill look at the color later I think its red or ornge. But what im wondering is would it be better for the syncros and all of the parts to use gear oil instead if its being driven hard.

You can be the pioneer and let us know how it turns out. Maybe nothing will happen. Or you may get a few more horses. I will follow your lead if your gear box doesn't blow up.

actually probably lose a few wheel hp... The gear oil is thicker than atf thus more resistance.
