I'm sure someone will check me on this but I think you can install one if you wish even if your car ('90) didn't have it.
I put one in a '90 E32 that never had it or perhaps it was removed and not replaced???

I have a Bosch .pdf (in 8 European languages) describing how to install a microfilter, and it shows it as applicable to 5 series and 7 series from June 90.

..if any one wants a copy let me know and I will email it

E32 and E34 is the same system. Oficially it was introduced in 06/1990, but better check it out, as some were equipped later.
